23 cars checked in for the 2002 Season Finale of the VRA
Senior Sprints Division. Yorba Linda's Wiley Miller claimed the championship
last week and looked to get win number eight of the season. To do so, he would
have to have the face the challenges from the 2001 Champ Jim Porter, 1985 CRA
Champion Eddie Wirth, Santa Maria Speedway standout John Jewett, and the rest
of this fast growing division. Tonight's action would feature 3 Heat Races and
all 23 racers would start in the Main Event.
John Jewett, who has not made an appearance at Ventura Raceway in quite some
time, won Heat 1 ahead of Chuck Tyler, John Richards, and John Woodward. A tangle early in the event claimed
both Richard Terry and Dale Harwood. It took the track crew some time to separate the cars and clear the track, but
the two drivers would return for the feature under the night's full moon.
The second heat was claimed by Jim Porter in his Tahitian-Noni #88 Stinger.
Stock car legend Roarin' Oren Prosser Sr. was second and Mike Cook took his
Cadillac powered Shrike to third. Preiss Movius crossed the stripe in fourth.
Wiley Miller was victorious in Heat 3 at the helm of his Roy Miller
Freightlines #75 Sprinter. He finished ahead of Oxnard's Rick Lewis, Sparky
Edmonston, and past feature winner R. Dayle Henry, who was fourth in the Carco
Engine & Machine #25 Entry.
The night's invert put Chuck Tyler and Jim Porter on the front row of the main
event. At the green, it was the #72 of Tyler that took the lead as Porter gave
chase. A few laps in, Tyler spun in turn 4 and gathered up Porter and Oren
Prosser Sr., who was in fourth. Both Prosser and Porter would restart, but the
#72 Sprinter was done for the night. This gave the lead to third place John
Jewett who looked strong, but was constantly pressured by Wiley Miller- who
was now in second. Numerous caution flags would claim several competitors,
including Richard Terry who took a tumble and was uninjured. The leaders,
Jewett and Miller, favored the low line- but a miscue by the Santa Maria
driver was all Miller
needed to grab the lead and take the win. Jewett finished in second and Ron
Bach surged to third from his 14th starting spot in the Ron Bach Construction
#49 TCR. John Woodward crossed the line in fourth and Jim Porter, who
restarted at the tail climbed back to fifth.
On October 26th, the SCRA Sprinters return to Ventura Raceway for the Annual
Wagsdash Event. Festivities will start at noon with auctions, a chili feed,
autograph sessions, and more for the fans to enjoy.
