The VRA Senior Sprints were back in action at Ventura Raceway.
Points Leader, Wiley Miller was looking for his seventh win of 2002 in the Roy
Miller Freightlines/Carson Valley Inc. #75 Stinger. Tonight's action had 15
Sprinters signed in for the 45 years young and older division.
With the recent issue regarding the possible closure of the
track and the noise, #6 Ron Butler tested some unique mufflers. The car had a
different/quieter sound to it and such efforts are needed to improve relations
with the track's neighbors. But several onlookers had questions about the size
and the dimensions of the mufflers, which nearly extend out to the nerf bars.
Ron Bach took his Ron Bach Construction/American
Express?/Visa? #49 TCR to victory in heat one. He was followed by Ron Butler, Curtis Richards,
and John Woodward.
Stock car legend "Roarin'" Oren Prosser Sr. won the
second heat race in the Associated Construction/Raney Racing Engines #44
Stinger. Jim Porter, Wiley Miller, and Rick Lewis followed.
Rick Lewis took command of the Main Event with a strong run in
his WorldGate Networks/RickLewis.com #50 TCR. He withstood the challenges from
Wiley Miller and a surging Ron Butler. Tight action resulted in contact
between Butler and Miller. This knocked the point leader out of the race. A
series of late yellows closed the field together and it took a last corner
pass for Oren Prosser to win by inches over Lewis. Third place Ron Bach was
right there at the blanket finish of the top 3.
Ventura Raceway has been in the news as of late, due to it's
possible closure and replacement with a concert venue. A website will be
launched with news and information regarding the situation at saveventuraraceway.com.
