32 Sprinters signed in to do battle on this night at Ventura
Raceway. SCRA had the week off and veterans Gary W. Howard (in the Shoemaker
#0) and Troy Rutherford (Kershaw #29) were among those on hand.
Heat race victories went to Josh Ford, Tom Stansberry, Tony
Dighera, and Gary W. Howard. Greg Taylor had to make the show from the semi,
along with former track champion Kevin Kierce, Chris Tramel, and Santa
Maria/Bandits regular Mike Knopf.
Chris Wakim lead early and started to make his way through the
back markers. Tony Dighera gave chase and closed in for the lead. The
two cars got together, resulting in a flip for Dighera, and a stop for Wakim.
Both had to tag the rear of the field, but Dighera lost a driveline under
yellow ending his night. Tom Stansberry inherited the lead, followed by Gary
W. Howard. The two were in a torrid battle and traded the lead several times.
Stansberry took the white flag after putting some distance between himself and
Howard. Then a yellow came out for a spun car. The restart had Stansberry,
Howard, and Points Leader Jimmy Crawford in third. After the green, Crawford
dove low and got under Howard. Stanberry drifted high, tagged the wall, saved
it and continued on. Crawford won his first race of 2002, followed by
Stansberry and Howard. A great race for those in attendance.
