Another large crowd enjoyed an intriguing 50-lap main event on
a very hot Southern California night. Third place starting Damion
Gardner seemed to have the field covered as he built full straightaway leads
over the competition. On or around lap 29, he had a small hole in the
side wall of his right rear and it went down all the way on lap 31. He
could not get the tire changed fast enough for the restart.
That gave the lead to Cory Kruseman, but Rip Williams raced around the outside
of him, took the lead and eventually built up a big lead like Gardner.
That evaporated with just a few laps to go when his right rear blew. In
the end, Griffin, who lurked in the top five all race long, pounced on the
lead and held off Kruseman and John Scott for a narrow victory.
Notable passing performances in the main included Kruseman 13th to 2nd, Gaunt
10th to 4th, Mitchell 22nd to 7th, Venard 19th to 8th and Hillberg 15th to
10th. Danny Faria Jr. had moved from 20th to 8th before his night ended
after a bout with the turn one wall.
Two hard turnovers on the night. Tony Lima in the B main and Mike Faria
(no relation to the Speedway Motorcycle rider) in the A main. Both
escaped uninjured.
