The SCRA Sprint Cars invaded Jim Naylor's Ventura Raceway for
the first time in 2002. This event, the Jeff Bagley Classic would have a
special 40-Lap Feature and share the spotlight with the VRA Senior Sprint
cars. Defending Race Champion Cory Kruseman was among the entries, including
VRA Points Leader Greg Taylor, multi-time Santa Maria Champion Jimmy Thompson,
John Scott (who won the last SCRA Ventura Main), Mike Kirby (most Ventura
wins) and "Super" Rickie Gaunt, who won last week at Perris.
The hard luck story of the night may have to go to the 2001
Wagsdash Champion Jarrett Chaney. He flipped twice in heat 1, causing 2 red
flags, and was involved in an incident in the B-Main. Another hard luck case
was Charles Davis Jr. who broke an axle on the first lap of heat 2- but with
the help from other team members, he was able to transfer out of the B-Main
and into the show.
Jimmy Thompson had a violent flip in the A-Main, which tore
down some billboards on the back stretch wall. Jimmy was ok, but done for the
race.
Tony Jones lead early and withstood the charges of John Scott.
Cory Kruseman made his presence felt and passed both on the outside line.
Kruseman pulled away and was caught in lapped traffic. Jones seized the
opportunity and was able to catch and pass Cory for the lead. Kruseman came
rallying back, and tagged a back marker, resulting in a spin. Mike Kirby came
up to pass Scott, but could not catch Jones.
