SCRA returned to action at Perris Auto Speedway after a 2 week hiatus in the
schedule. With 44 cars on hand, fans were anticipating a good show and they
were not disappointed.
Several drivers made their first appearance of 2002. "The
Mighty" Casey Shuman was the new driver of Bill Pratt's #12 Sprinter.
Former Off-Road Champion, Bob Ferro was back in his #91X. "The One Man
Band" Dan Tedrick was in his 10-plus year old #88 Tognotti. "World
Famous" Tom Downing was back with SCRA, after competing with the VRA
Sprint Cars last week. Rick Hinrichsen made a return since 2000, in a red #9
with flames to honor "Big" George Gervais.
Some cars debuted a new paint scheme. "Showtime"
Danny Sheridan had a freshly painted #57 Spin-Tech Motorsports Stinger. Jack
DeArmond Jr. had a brand new purple #24 Stinger.
Jarrett Chaney, the 2000 SCRA Rookie of the Year, was in Rick
Becker's #67 Stinger for the night. VRA Points leader Greg Taylor, fresh from
last week's win at Ventura Raceway, was in the Taylor #7T Ellis. VRA Rookie
Eric Severson took to the PAS half-mile for the first time.
Gardner Motorsports' Troy Rutherford set fast time on the
night with a 16.807. Heat Race Action was torrid, as the 3 of the heat race
winners came from the 4th row (Gardner, Williams, and Kruseman.) While the
track was dry, there was alot of two groove racing, slide jobs, and three
abreast racing.
Many in attendance called the night's Passing Masters Dash,
the best in the history of SCRA. Newcomer Damion Gardner had a fierce battle
with "The Gasman" Richard Griffin. In the end, Gardner won the right
to start on the pole and would have to face the challenges of the SCRA
veterans.
Cory Kruseman, Richard Griffin, and Mike Kirby were battling
in the later stages of the A-Main that had fans on their feet. Early front
runners, Damion Gardner, Tony Jones, Rickie Gaunt, and Rip Williams were
involved in incidents that sent them to the back.
Verne Sweeney had a wild flip down the back straight in the
early laps of the main event. He was uninjured. The SCRA will return to action
at Perris on April 27th.
