The VRA and VRA Senior Sprints headlined tonight's program at the racy Ventura Raceway. Since the SCRA was off for the weekend, Cory Kruseman, Mike Kirby, Tom Downing, and last week's VRA Main Event Winner, Troy Rutherford were on hand.
The night got off to a rough start as in the Seniors Heat 1, a spinning Preiss Movius collected 1985 CRA Champion Eddie Wirth. Wirth had a rough tumble down the front straight in Cory Kruseman's #1K. Both drivers were ok, but done for the night.
Heat 1 for the VRA Sprints was called one of the best ever at Ventura Raceway by many in attendance. The stout heat race looked like a mini-feature, with Troy Rutherford, Chris Wakim, Gary Howard, Josh Ford, and Tom Stansberry doing battle. There was plenty of three wide action and dicing for the fans to enjoy. Defending Champion Gary Howard had a determined drive and took the victory.
Ron Bach took the win in the Senior Sprints A-Main. Early leaders Jim Porter and Wiley Miller were penalized to the back for failing to stop on a red flag. Bach inherited the lead and held off all challengers.
In the VRA Sprints A-Main, Greg Taylor took the win after chasing down race leader Jimmy "Neutron" Crawford. Mike Kirby was moving towards the front in the Buzz Shoemaker #0, previously driven by Gary W. Howard, but pulled in. Cory Kruseman failed to make the start as problems claimed the Chulahoff #5C.
Ventura Raceway is dark next week, and will resume action on April 20th with the VRA Sprints, Modifieds, Pony Stocks, and CDCRA Dwarf Cars.
The SCRA Sprint Cars return to action on the 13th at Perris Auto Speedway.
