Notes:
An exciting night of racing was in order as the SCRA Sprint Cars
made it's last appearance of the 2001 Season at it's home track, Perris Auto
Speedway. 47 cars signed in for the annual Jack Kindoll Classic, a race in
honor of the longtime California Sprint Car owner. Most notable among his
drivers is multi-time CRA Champion Jimmy Oskie, who was on hand to pace the
field in Buzz Shoemaker's #27 King 'o Lawn Sprinter.
USAC's Bill Rose and Tony Elliott
were in local SCRA rides, as Elliott was behind the wheel of the Gardner
Motorsports #96 Sprinter. Tony would later go on to win the fourth heat race.
Rose was chosen to drive the Rick Becker #67, wrenched by Ray Sheets. Mike
English returned to action on this night, as "The Ripper" Rip
Williams' teammate in the #3jr.
Northern California's Andy
Forsberg once again made the trek south, this time with a 1980's Maxwell-copy
chassis that had spent some considerable time in his grandmother's backyard. Indianapolis 500 veteran, Cory Witherill
fielded a two car effort, with Jimmy May and Marc Hart in the WSA Health Care
#61X and #16X.
Former Sammy Swindell wrench, Brad
Meyers made a rare non-wing appearance in the #3M. Unfortunately, he would
later get upside down in the C-Main. He was uninjured, but reports are that
the car was totaled. Jack DeArmond Jr. had a new ride for the evening- the Ron
DiDonato #57 Stinger. Paul Beregszazy and David Bateman made the journey from
Arizona. Bateman, Bobby Boone, and Rodney Argo scratched for the event with
mechanical problems before qualifying.
USAC Western Midgets competitor
Brian Stanfill was the driver in the Crossno #38. He made the most of the
opportunity, as he made the Passing Masters Dash and was running sixth in the
50-lap main event before a crash ended his night.
In qualifying, it was "The
Cowboy" Tony Jones who set quick time with a 16.320 in the Mike Wall
#37.
Fan favorite Cal Smith scored the
win in heat race #2, over veterans Cory Kruseman, Richard Griffin, Mike Kirby,
and John Scott. Kirby was in second, until his hood flew off, causing him to
be black flagged.
Santa Maria's "Showtime"
Danny Sheridan won the Passing Masters Dash, driving for Tom & Laurie
Sertich in the Moose Racing #92.
In the Main Event,
"Super" Rickie Gaunt led early, until being overtaken by Tony Jones.
Jones had built up a lead over the field that was erased by a red flag for
Brian Stanfill. After the restart, Jones was once again building up a lead
from the pack, but this time he was followed by Cory Kruseman. Both cars made
their way through lapped traffic, and then Cory made his move taking the lead
from Jones. Kruseman, the 2001 Champion, never looked back on his way to his
record setting 15th SCRA victory in a season. Jones finished in second and
third went to "Hollywood" John Scott.
It was announced that Michael
Hinrichsen is the 2001 SCRA Rookie of the Year. His closest competitor, Mike
Spencer, the 2001 NWWC Rookie of the Year, made the transfer to the main
event, but could not earn enough points to upset Hinrichsen.
SCRA will return to action at
Perris Auto Speedway on February 9, 2002 for it's first "day race"
in the track's history.
