SCRA returned to the valley of the
sun for round one of the 2001 Western World Championship. Tonight's action
featured 23 cars in the pits to attack the Manzy clay. Early in the program,
it was announced that there would be some changes to tonight's program, as
some teams had elected to change when they competed.
Missing from tonight's scheduled
action were Jon Stanbrough, Tony Lima, and Tony Jones. Scratched from
tonight's program were Mel Murphy and Bobby Marcum. Levi Jones will substitute
for an injured Glenn Crossno tomorrow night, Tyler Walker was behind the wheel
of the Witherill/WSA Health Care #61, Mike English was in the Lowell Carsten
#91A, and Bill Rose put the Hillberg #82 through it's paces. Add-ons for
tonight's action were Mike Kirby, Steve Cushman, Randy Miller, and Marty
Wilcox. Bud Kaeding made the tow from Indiana, driving the BK Motorsports #29K
Maxim, wrenched by Davey Jones. Paul Beregzsazy's #5B failed to fire and he
did not take a green flag in qualifying.
Derek Davidson was subbing for an
injured Jay Drake, in the Keith Kunz' wrenched #18. After tagging the wall in
heat #1 due to contact with Walker, his crew and many others thrashed on the
car to replace both a front and rear end. The car missed the B-Main, but did
tag the A-Main and Davidson was the hard charger on the night.
Hard luck story on the night is
Mike English, who suffered a blown engine in heat 2, that ended his night.
Bud Kaeding won
the first night of the Western World Championships in wire to wire fashion
with a 3.03 second lead over Jerry Coons Jr. and Cory Kruseman, The top 8 are locked into Saturday's finale.
