SCRA returned to
Jim Naylor's Ventura Raceway for the final time of the 2001 Season. This
occasion also included the 11th Running of the Wagsdash. The early festivities
included a Pit Crew competition. Fischer Motorsports, the reigning champion,
welcomed challenges from the teams of Mel Murphy, "Big" George
Gervais, and Ronnie Clark. In the end, it was the Hank Winter Racing team for
Ronnie Clark that was victorious.
Lance Gremett, the
2000 Sexiest Driver for SCRA, faced many challengers. "Showtime"
Danny Sheridan was declared the winner of the title for 2001. Honorable
mentions go to Ronnie Clark, and the team of "Super" Rickie Gaunt
and "The Kruser" Cory Kruseman.
Buster Venard
served as the 2001 Wagsdash Grand Marshall. He joined fellow Legends of Ascot,
John Redican, Jimmy Oskie, and Eddie Wirth in an autograph session with some
of SCRA's stars including Troy Rutherford, Ronnie Clark, Hank Winter, Gary W.
Howard, and
Jarrett Chaney.
40 Cars were
signed in to challenge the Ventura clay. "The Cowboy" Tony Jones was
in a brand new # 2 Gardner Sled, prepared for Tony Elliott to race at the Oval
Nationals. Tony made the best of the opportunity, as he would later win the
Passing Masters Dash. Also in the Gardner Stable, CRA Main Event Winner,
Charlie "CZ" Zabinski returned to action, driving the #96 Sled,
normally driven by Jimmy Gardner Jr.
Several local VRA
regulars entered tonight's racing action. VRA Senior Sprints driver, Ron Bach,
rookie Josh Ford, Chris Wakim, Greg Taylor, Errol Sachs, and Chris Tramel, who
was in Cory Kruseman's #77 Driving School car, tried their luck on this night.
Bach won the C-Main. Glenn Hopper, made the drive from Placerville to enter
SCRA competition.
There were 2
driver changes on the program. Phoenix, Arizona's "The Shermanator"
Jeremy Sherman was driving the Mark Priestley owned #7 Stealth, while Mike
English was driving the #75 Stinger, owned by Wiley Miller. English would go
on to win Heat #2.
Tony Jones led the
majority of tonight's 30 lap main event. Jones was making his way through
traffic, and jumped the wheel of back marker Mike Spencer. Jones recovered and
fell to second, behind a charging John Scott. Scott would claim the win in his
Pace Electronics #83, over a late surging Mike Kirby and Jones. A new 30 lap
track record was set at 6:18.03. "The Wildman" Rodney Argo won the
Hard Charger Award.
It was announced
that "The Kruser" Cory Kruseman only had to take a green flag in
tonight's competition to claim the title of the 2001 SCRA Champion Driver.
After the main event, Cory celebrated his title by spinning donuts in the
infield, in his Harlan Willis/Worldgate Networks #45. He is the first SCRA
Champion Driver from California. Previous champions, "The Flying
Shoe" Ron Shuman and "The Tempe Tornado" Lealand McSpadden were
from Arizona, and "The Gasman" Richard Griffin hails from New
Mexico. The SCRA Owners Championship is still up for grabs with 3 races
remaining on the schedule. Points leader Harlan Willis is battling 6-time
champion Ron Chaffin for the title.
Jarrett Chaney
claimed the win in the 11th running of the Wagsdash. Chaney took control of
the race after passing leader Ronnie Clark and won by almost half a lap
over Gary W. Howard and SCRA Rookie Mike Spencer, who won the Lafond Jar of Change for best passing
job.
