Rip Williams finally ended his long winless streak by recording an impressive
win in the 30-lap SCRA Sprint Car main event at Perris Auto Speedway on
Saturday night. The victory was his first in the Gambler. Pole
sitter Rickie Gaunt set the early pace. A great battle ensued between
Gaunt, Williams and Richard Griffin with Griffin going to the inside and
passing Gaunt for the lead and Williams then passing Griffin on the inside for
the lead.
After Williams pulled away, there was a tremendous four and some times five
way fight for 2nd through fifth over the last 15 laps. The positions
constantly changed with Danny Sheridan taking the second at the line over
Griffin, Kruseman and Gaunt. There battle overshadowed the fine drive of
Mike Kirby who started fourteenth and ended up six.
Tony Jones was leading the third heat when a connecting rod ended up through
the oil pan and put him out for the night. John Scott transferred out of
his heat race and was slated to go in the JE Pistons Passing Master Dash, but
he lost and engine and was done for the night. Gary W. Howard scratched
before the night began with engine problems.
Dan Tedrick nearly made his first ever SCRA main, but was passed by Cal Smith
for the last transfer spot in the third heat race.
Jeremy Sherman won the WorldCom USAC Western Midget main event over Robby
Flock.
A very large enthusiastic crowd was on hand for the sprint cars final tune up
before the November 1st, 2nd and 3rd Budweiser/Temecula Valley Pipe and Supply
Oval Nationals at The PAS
