SCRA returned to
action at Manzanita Speedway's Hall of Fame Classic with 27 Sprint Cars in the
pits. During their last visit on May 19th, it was Richard "The
Gasman" Griffin who found victory circle. Also on hand were about 30
vintage midgets and sprinters.
Several
Arizona/ASCA locals were in attendance. Jeremy Sherman, Jerry Coons Jr., Bob
Ream Jr., Mike Boat, Nathan High, and Paul Beregzaszy signed in to challenge
the SCRA regulars. Cal Smith crossed the desert to drive the Powers/Walsh
Bros. #65 Sprinter. "Cowboy" Tony Jones hoped to avenge his last
outing at Perris, in a newly painted Wall #37. Several of the sprinters
proudly displayed the American Flag to show their support.
In qualifying, it
was "Chargin" Charles Davis Jr. who set the pace with a 19.132. This
was the second fast time in a row for Davis. Before racing action was set to
start, everyone in the pits (drivers, crew members, etc.) gathered on the
front straightaway during the playing of several patriotic songs. Then,
everyone in attendance joined in and sang along with the national anthem.
Tonight's action
would have 3 heats with 5 transferring. 7 cars would also make the show from
the B-Main. The heats were won by Mike Kirby, Cal Smith, and Jerry Coons Jr.
The Passing Masters Dash was won by Rip Williams. Charles Davis won the B-Main
and transferred to the show, along with Troy Rutherford, Rickie Gaunt, Steve Ostling,
Ronnie Clark, Michael Hinrichsen, and Paul Beregzaszy.
Rip Williams got
the jump at the start of the Main Event. Danny Sheridan challenged early,
until dropping out with problems. Richard Griffin took up the chase after Rip,
until a rock smashed through the hood and knocked the fuel line off. Griffin
was done for the night.
Tony Jones made
his way through traffic and chased down Rip. Jones executed a brilliant slide
job to take the lead on lap 21. Jones steadily increased his lead and crossed
the line ahead of Williams, Kruseman, Rutherford, and Ream. In celebration,
Jones climbed the fence, as the Wall #37 crew were very happy with their first
win.
