Laps Led: Williams 1-39, Jones 40-44, Williams 45-49, Griffin 50
Notes:
According to many, this was the best Sprint Car race they had ever seen.
Rip Williams led most of the way and at several times built up a half
straightaway lead. There was a fabulous eight-car battle for the second
through ninth positions that raged for approximately 25 laps in the middle of
the main with positions changing every lap. Among those in that battle were
Richard Griffin, Tony Jones, Troy Cline, Cory Kruseman, Jarrett Chaney, John
Scott, Charles Davis Jr., Danny Sheridan, Rickie Gaunt and others.
Jones started 14th worked his way through the pack in the Mike Wall #37. He
took the lead from Williams with one of his monster slide jobs in turn three
and moved away from the field. In only his second time in the car, Jones
looked to be headed for the win when his engine quit entering turn one on lap
44.
Williams was back in first on the restart, but received a heavy challenge
from Jarrett Chaney, before another flag slowed the field. The final few laps
featured a fierce battle with Williams, Chaney and Griffin. Williams led down
the back chute on the last lap and seemed to have his winless streak coming
to an end, but Griffin blasted by as they hit turn three. It still wasn’t
over. In the most spectacular finish in Perris Auto Speedway history,
Griffin, Williams and Chaney came off turn four three abreast as they battled
for the checked. Griffin got the best drive off the corner and finished with
Williams and Chaney on his push bar.
Huge crowd and no injuries in the crashes. Cory Kruseman was in contention
for his seventh straight PAS win, but got upside down after contact with Troy
Cline on lap 47. Troy Rutherford turned his car over to avoid plowing into
the flipping Kruseman
