Notes:
An exciting night of racing was on tap as the SCRA Sprint Cars visited Jim
Naylor's Ventura Raceway of the second time this year. Hometown favorite Cory
Kruseman won the first outing in 2001- the Jeff Bagley Classic on May 5th.
The night started
with 38 Sprint Cars in the pits, with several local VRA rides in the house.
VRA regulars included Tony Dighera, Chris Wakim, Ron Bach, Josh Ford and Steve
Chulahoff. Chris Wakim had a new 410 ride on this evening. Both of Cory
Kruseman's Sprint Car School Cars were entered, driven by Bill Camarillo and
Chris Tramel. Indianapolis 500 veteran Cory Witherill made a rare appearance
in a sprinter. His team had a two car effort, with Jimmy May as his teammate.
Hank Winter returned to action in a new ride- the Ron Didonato / Superior
Motorsports #57 Sprinter.
In qualifying,
"Haulin' Hollywood" John Scott set Fast Time with a 16.900. VRA /
SCRA Driver Greg Taylor tagged and climbed the front stretch wall after
completing his first timed lap. The car had front end damage and the crew had
him ready for his heat race.
The C-Main had a
wild 2 car flip on the front stretch involving Dan Tedrick and Tony Lima. Both
drivers were momentarily shaken, but otherwise ok. Jarrett Chaney, who had
early contact with Mel Murphy, won the C-Main.
The heat races
were on by Mike Kirby, Troy Rutherford, Richard Griffin, and Bobby Graham.
Jack DeArmond Jr. and Mike Spencer made their first
Passing Masters Dash on this night. DeArmond would start sixth in the main
event, while Spencer started seventh. Richard Griffin won the PMD from the
pole.
In the B-Main,
veteran driver Rip Williams was involved in 2 tangles and was done for the
night. Race leader and rookie VRA driver Josh Ford spun and collected the
second and third place cars of Charles Davis Jr. and Jimmy May. All drivers
were ok and only Davis failed to restart. Fourth place Ronnie Clark inherited
the lead and held off Jordan Hermansader for the victory.
The A-Main had a
wild start, as Greg Taylor hit the starting cone, Rodney Argo and Michael
Hinrichsen tangled in turn 3. As the yellow flag was shown, Jack DeArmond
tagged the front stretch wall and the car came to rest on its side. All cars
made the restart at the back.
Early action had
close racing between Richard Griffin, John Scott, Cory Kruseman, Mike English,
and Troy Rutherford.
On lap 11, Lance
Gremett lost a left rear wheel, which was avoided by several other cars.
Gremett was on the "hook" and would later return to action.
On lap 12, a
yellow was thrown for debris on the track- Mike Kirby's right side nerf bar.
Mike Spencer and Bobby Graham tangled, but would restart.
Cory Kruseman
passed early leader Richard Griffin in a spirited battle on lap 14. John Scott
and Troy Rutherford also had a strong race for the third and fourth place
spots.
On lap 16, Jordan
Hermansader pirouetted the Pratt #12 Sprinter in turn 4. The car landed on its
side and a red flag was thrown. The crew was able to get Jordan's #12
back for the restart. Lance Gremett rejoined the field.
Mike Kirby was
making his way to the front, up from his 17th starting spot. He was up to 6th
and looking very strong. His car was starting to smoke and he would later hold
on for fifth.
"2 car
stops" would later claim Michael Hinrichsen and Jordan Hermansader.
On laps 23/24,
there was tight action for the first 3 spots- Kruseman, Griffin, and
Rutherford. At the same time, positions 4-6 were up for grabs between Scott,
Mike English, and Mike Kirby. Kirby's car was showing alot of smoke, and he
would win "Hard Charger" on the night.
Cory Kruseman was
victorious in front hometown fans. With this victory, Cory ties Rip Williams' season win record at
13 and the win marked his 50th SCRA Win.
After checkered
flags were thrown, Jack DeArmond tangled with Ronnie Clark in turn one. Both
drivers were ok.
