Barona, CA October 19, 2002 - Gary Sexton puts on a Wingless 101
driver's clinic for CA Lightning Sprint competitors.
The CA Lightning Sprints visited Barona Speedway in a no-points sort
of tune-up race in anticipation of adding wingless racing to the CLS
schedule in 2003. In the words of CLS President Gary Sexton "we
live in wingless sprint car country here in Southern
California". For the many aspiring SCRA drivers in the CLS the
wingless experience should prove to be very valuable. Maybe just a
whole lot of fun for the rest of us!
The evening began as expected with several cars spinning in hot
laps. The learning curve was quick though as both heat races and the
25 lap main event went green to checkered without caution.
Kip McCleary took the first heat race by storm from the outside
front row ahead of 3rd row charger Jesse Dean, Pat Hickey, James
Squire, Dan Lancaster, Jon Squire and Steve Nelson.
Gary Sexton won the second heat race by a wheel at the finish line
ahead of race long leader Seth Kramer, Brent Sexton, Josh Williams,
Lonnie Clabaugh, Dylan Morris and Clint Newman.
Josh Williams & James Squire brought the field to the green flag
to start the A Main. Williams got the early jump on the field ahead
of Squire and Brent Sexton. Brent Sexton, Jesse Dean and Pat Hickey
quickly picked up the chase on the 2nd lap dropping Squire to 5th.
Fourth row starter Gary Sexton wasted little time moving up to 3rd
by lap 4! Williams continued to lead by a wheel running a higher
line with Brent Sexton running a low line. Seth Kramer moved into
the top 5 on lap 7 passing Pat Hickey. Brent Sexton was able to get
a run on Williams coming off of turn 2 & held a slim lead going
into turn 3 as the two entered the corner inches apart approaching
lapped traffic. Williams had regained the lead by the corner's exit.
Gary Sexton had closed the gap by lap 10 as the two battled up
front. Williams drifted wide entering turn 3 and Brent passed for
sole posession of the top spot. Gary Sexton followed in the same
corner knocking Williams back to 3rd. Gary Sexton went to work on
his son Brent right away & took the lead two laps later as Brent
then drifted wide in turn 3. Gary Sexton resumed the driver's clinic
in lapped traffic quickly moving out to a strong lead for the win
and hard charger honors.
