Perris, CA September 7, 2002 -
"He's Baaack!" Brent Sexton's bad luck streak which has
sidelined the former champion throughout much of the season subsided
long enough to allow him to sneak in a victory and a perfect night
at the fast half mile speedway! The first heat race went to Brent
ahead of very fast company in Darren Hagen, Gary Sexton, Kip
McCleary and Ashley Walker. The 2nd heat race was won by Jonny Bates
ahead of Paul Townsend, Keith Janca, Josh Williams and Steve Cardey.
Heat race 3 was won by Greg Bragg. Pat Hickey, Dan Lancaster, Mel
Murphy and Jim Henderson rounded out the top 5.
Brent Sexton and Jonny Bates made up the front row of the main
event. Brent and Jonny quickly opened up a gap on the field running
a blistering pace. Greg Bragg passed Hagen on the 2nd lap for 3rd
but the 44 & 33 cars were already getting away. Brent lead
comfortably up to the mid-point of the race when Bates began to
close the small gap. Bates appeared to be in position to challenge
several times but the much more experienced Sexton made quick work
of lapped traffic to keep Jonny at bay. Brent Sexton led all 20 laps
to score his first win of 2002. Ashley Walker earned hard charger
moving up 6 to finish 7th.
