Lightning Sprints @ Lemoore Midget Raceway
Lemoore, CA August 31, 2002 - Greg Bragg
won his 3rd straight feature, 6th of the year as the CLS made their
first visit to the 1/6th mile oval. Greg's victory further extended
his CLS championship points lead and gave him a come-from-behind
Championship over David Cardey in the Guglielmo Winery Mini Series.
As the 2002 season heads toward the white flag with 4 races
remaining the closely contested Rookie Of The Year title is closer
than ever. Former off-road racer Jonny Bates holds a 13 point
advantage over 2001 Multisprint Rookie Of The Year Ashley Walker.
Both outstanding drivers have enjoyed great success thus far with
Ashley winning 3 heat races and Bates scoring ten top 10 finishes.
Darren Hagen grabbed the first heat race from the outside front row
ahead of Josh Williams, Brent Sexton and Paul Townsend. David Cardey
won the 2nd heat from the pole ahead of Wink Schweitzer, Ashley
Walker and Gary Sexton. The 3rd heat was won by BCRA regular Lonnie
Lopez ahead of a charging Greg Bragg, Keith Janca and Jim Henderson.
Darren Hagen paced the field to the green flag along side David
Cardey. Twenty One cars didn't fit into the first corner as caution
flew for several cars spun and stopped along the first two turns.
All made the restart except Hagen and Paul Townsend. David Cardey
led the first lap of the restart before breaking a chain. Lonnie
Lopez then led. Greg Bragg and Brent Sexton came charging through to
take the 1 & 2 spots. Lopez later retook the 2nd spot from
Sexton on lap 6. Wink Schweitzer then moved into 3rd on the next lap
and moved into 2nd on lap 12. Lonnie again claimed 2nd place as he
passed Wink on lap 19.
After flipping twice earlier in his heat race and starting 20th in
the main, Donny Gansen moved into the top 5 on lap 20. Gansen later
earned hard charger of the race finishing 3rd. The fast laps around
the small oval proved difficult to score as Greg Bragg took the
checkered flag on the 31st lap of the 30 lap feature!
