June 15, 2002...David Cardey made it
look easy Saturday night at Barona Speedway! “This one feels
pretty good because we haven’t been able to win here before.”
There were many bent nerf bars at the end of the evening as just 6
of 20 cars made it to the race shortened 25 laps. An obviously
great setup effort by the chief (DAD) Jim Cardey on the Team SADD
black # 37 as it appeared as though he was on a much smoother
surface than the rest of the field.
The evening kicked off as usual for most except for Steve Cardey as
he was looking for a confidence booster and went out to hot lap with
the 600 Multi-Sprints! Chris Rahe again clocked the quickest
lap in 14.3 seconds. Notably fast also was rookie points
leader Ashley Walker with a 14.4 qualifying effort. Dylan
Morris led most of the first heat race with Vince Tjemeland in 2nd.
Vince was able to pass Dylan for the win. Jesse Dean, Gary
Sexton and Chris Rahe made the transfer. Greg Bragg ran out of
laps and would have to settle for a rare B Main appearance.
David Cardey made quick work of the 2nd heat race lineup to take the
win from the his 7th place starting position. Donny Gansen,
Karl Benefeil, Nick Nicholson and Danny Swanson occupied transfer
spots at the finish. Veteran Lonnie Clabaugh used the front
row to his advantage and led the field of rookies to win the 3rd
heat race. Aaron Reyer, Adam Householder, Jonny Bates and
Ashley Walker transferred to the A Main. This left the front
row of the B Main consisting of fast qualifiers Greg Bragg and Paul
Townsend. Paul used the outside line to get the jump on Bragg
and drive off to win. Ernie Bartley moved up to take the 3rd
transfer spot from his 10th place starting position ahead of Steve
Cardey and Josh Williams.
Chris Rahe paced the field to the green flag from the pole along
side Ashley Walker. Rahe jumped out into the lead as David
Cardey followed. Gary Sexton passed Ashley Walker for 3rd on
lap 3. The red flag was waved on the following lap for Steve
Cardey and Josh Williams as they tangled in turn 3 with Williams
upside down. The action was again halted on lap 8 as contact
between Ernie Bartley and Lonnie Clabaugh left Lonnie upside down on
the front stretch. Donny Gansen passed Jonny Bates to enter
the top 5 on the restart. David Cardey was in perfect position
to capitalize on Chris Rahe’s continued bad luck as Rahe dropped
out on lap 11 with mechanical problems. Jonny Bates retired
from the race on lap 12 surrendering the 5th spot to Greg Bragg.
Bragg was on the move from his 17th place starting position.
Ashley Walker had dropped off the pace on lap 13 with a mechanical
problem when Danny Swanson clipped her right rear tire and spun on
the front stretch but recovered nicely to loose only 1 position to
Jesse Dean. Caution flew on lap 20 as Greg Bragg and Donny
Gansen tangled while battling for the 3rd spot leaving Gansen parked
for the evening. Bragg made the restart but pulled off with a
flat tire. Aaron Reyer in his first CLS start of the year was
now up to 5th after falling back to 10th earlier in the race.
Gary Sexton broke on lap 23 while running a strong 2nd to David
Cardey and was also finished. Danny Swanson looked to be the
only one able to challenge Cardey as he moved into 2nd on lap 24.
Damage resulting from earlier contact sent Swanson spinning in turn
2 after completion of the 25th lap. The checkered flag was
brought out during the caution as just 7 cars remained. David
Cardey picked up his 2nd win of the season ahead of two Jesse Dean
cars driven by Jesse himself and Aaron Reyer in 2nd & 3rd place
respectively. Vince Tjemeland was hard charger moving up 9 to
finish 4th. Nick Nicholson finished 5th.
