June 1, 2002...Greg Bragg returned to
victory lane for the fourth time in 2002 with a win at Barona
Speedway Saturday night! The evening began with Chris Rahe
making the quickest qualifying lap in 14.2 seconds. The heat
race line-up was inverted with the fastest qualifyers starting back
to the 3rd & 4th rows. The first heat race got under way
with James Dean taking the win ahead of Donny Gansen. Ashley
Walker fought an ill handling car to finish 3rd. James Squire
finished 4th and Dan Lancaster finishing 5th in only his 2nd CLS
start. The 2nd heat race was won by Gary Sexton who checked
out early with a half lap lead. Danny Swanson held off a
charging Greg Bragg for 2nd. Paul Townsend finished 4th.
Jesse Dean withstood the attack from Chris Rahe to finish 4th.
Chris Rahe clipped the turn 4 crash wall & could not finish.
David Cardey won the 3rd heat race from the 3rd row ahead of Adam
Householder & Ernie Bartley. Nick Nicholson finished 4th.
Josh Williams took the final transfer spot. The B Main started
Dylan Morris on the pole with Chris Rahe starting on the 5th row.
Lonnie Clabaugh jumped out into the lead as Chris Rahe drove high
around the field of 10. Lonnie took the win ahead of Rahe.
Dylan Morris finished 3rd. Steve Cardey and Mike Barnette made
up the final transfer positions.
David Cardey brought the field of 20 to the green flag for the start
of the A Main. David Cardey got the hole shot ahead of Greg
Bragg. Father & Son duo Jesse & James Dean ran 3rd
& 4th with James Squire fifth. James passed Dad on lap 5
to take the 3rd spot. The fast pace had the leaders reaching
lapped traffic in just 7 laps! Once in lapped traffic Greg
Bragg was able to pass Cardey for the lead on lap 10. Ernie
Bartley took the fifth spot from Squire on lap 12. Bartley
broke loose & began to spin a lap later leaving Donny Gansen
nowhere to go as the two crashed. Upon the restart Chris Rahe
exploded through the field passing 4 cars in 1 lap to go from 8th to
4th. Josh Williams slipped by Jesse Dean on lap 18 to move
into the top 5. The red flag was waved on lap 21 as James
Squire flipped in turn 2. Gary Sexton slipped under Williams
for 5th on the restart. Chris Rahe had just passed James Dean
for 3rd on lap 24 when he brushed the wall & got sideways.
The close running pair then tangled eliminating both from the race.
Adam Householder after running in the 600 Multi-Sprint Division
entered the top 5. Ashley Walker took the 5th spot away with 3
laps left enabling her to move into the point lead for Rookie Of The
Year Honors. David Cardey pressured Bragg for the win but for
the 4th time Greg Bragg took the checkered flag. David
Cardey’s high scoring evening allowed him to move into 2nd place
in the race for the Championship behind Greg Bragg. Steve
Cardey earned hard charging honors moving up 9 positions to finish
9th.
