Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, New Mexico broke out of a seven-way dogfight for the
USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series point lead with his feature victory Saturday
night at Rocky Mountain Speedway in Denver, Colo.
Ziehl came from behind to nip Beau Binder at the checkered
flag after Binder had led for 29-3/4 laps on the 1/2-mile dirt oval! Trailing
Ziehl's Lucas Oil Avenger/Chevy were Rich Bubak, Binder, Keith Rauch and Patrick
Bourke.
Brandon Lane, the series leader entering the Denver race,
finished 11th and trails Ziehl by 20 points going into an August 2 race at
Aztec, N.M.
USAC's first Sprint Car race in Denver produced some
spectacular racing and one of the most exciting finishes in series history. It
was USAC's first race at the track since 1992 when a pair of Midget races were
won by Sleepy Tripp and Eric Wilkins.
