CO. (July 12, 2003)…. Rick
Ziehl from Las Cruces, New Mexico won the 30 Lap USAC Non-Wing Southwest Sprint
Car Series on the last lap Saturday night at Rocky Mountain National Speedway in
Commerce City, Colorado. With Beau Binder starting on the pole and with Gary Appel on the outside, Binder took the lead on the start on the dry slick 3/8 Mile oval. Ziehl, starting third row outside, was working his way up the field. On lap eight, the yellow flag came when local driver Brian Jamesion spun in turn four collecting Mike Martin, and David Burns. Martin retired to the pits and Burns restarting. With Binder, Patrick Bourke and Rich Bubak battling for the lead, Ziehl running in the forth position passed all three driver on the last lap coming off of turn four, at the checker it was Ziehl, Bubak, Binder, Keith Rauch and Bourke. Heat race winners were Matthew Rossi, Patrick Bourke and Ronnie Clark. Dash winner was Rich Bubak, and “B” Feature winner was Nick Haygood. In other open wheel racing, Keith Rauch won the 15 Lap RMMRA Midget “A” Feature event. The top five finishers were Rauch, Kenny Lewis, Gary Taylor, Chris DeShon and Andy Mason.
