Santa Maria, CA - September 6, 2003...Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, tried
to extend his lead in the J.B. Dewar Sprint Car division Saturday night at Santa
Maria Speedway, but it didn't work out. Starting outside the front row for the
30-lap main event during the 10th Annual Firefighters' Night sponsored by Sunny
Country 102.5 FM, Thompson was battling hard for the lead with Gary Rayburn,
Jr., also of Grover Beach, and Aaron Altaffer, of Tulare, when disaster struck.
Thompson dove under Rayburn for the lead exiting turn four on the sixth lap. The
two cars made contact, sending both into the wall and Rayburn into a flip.
Rayburn was through for the night, while Thompson was able to continue to an
eleventh place finish. Altaffer took over the lead on the restart and stayed
their for the duration, followed by Kerman's Davey Pombo and Atascadero's Greg
Porte. The win moved Altaffer back into the Bandit Series point lead by four
points over Porte. Fourth went to A.J. Burgin, of Kingsburg, and fifth to John
Burnett of Fresno. Thompson, Porte and Richard Harvey, Jr., of Hanford, won
8-lap heat races and Pombo set fast
time of 15.636 seconds.
The winged California Rebel Cup Sprint Cars ran a caution
free 30-lap feature event won by Ricci Faria of Visalia. Faria overtook Andy
Ferris, of Mariposa, ten laps from the finish and led him the rest of the way.
Third went to Mark Barroso, of Merced, fourth to Luke Berberia, of Tulare, and
fifth to Lawrence Edlund of Caruthers. Ferris and Coalinga's Tim Worth captured
8-lap heat races and Monty Ferriera, of Hanford, was fast on the
clocks at 13.695 seconds.
Zeiders Farms Mini Stocks were the third division on the
schedule. Once again the Atascadero team of Tom Grzincic and Darrin Davis placed
first and second to extend their lead in the championship. Santa Maria's Scott
Fowler finished third ahead of Santa Maria's Mark Tull and Lompoc's Mike Weigel.
Grzincic, Davis and Jeremy Heroux, of Nipomo, took the 8-lap heat races.
Next Saturday night will be the second special in three weeks
for the Street Stock division. This time it's the Diamond Jewelry & Loan and
Diamond Video World double purse event paying $1,400.00 to win. The Street Stock
will be joined by Zeiders Farms Mini Stocks, Crossroads Community Church Factory
Stocks, and Jim Vreeland Ford Campus Motorsports Factory Stocks.
Gates open at four and racing begins at seven. Adult
admission is $12.00, seniors (65+) $10.00, and children 6 to 12 $3.00.
Santa Maria Speedway can be found 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on
Hutton Road. Their home on the internet is
