Santa Maria, CA - August 9, 2003...Bobby Elliott, of Fresno, drove a nearly
perfect race for 29 of the 30 laps in the J.B. Dewar/Bandit Sprint Car main
event Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. Elliott fought off the repeated
challenges of local point leader Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, for ten laps
before the three-time defending champ made an outside move in the final turn of
the final lap to take the victory. Elliott was second, followed by Aaron Chaney,
of Clovis, and Davey Pombo of Kerman. Atascadero's Greg Porte finished fifth and
won an 8-lap heat race. Elliott and Riverside's Ron Di Donato won the other
heats and Bandit Series point leader Aaron Altaffer, of Tulare, set fast time of
14.170 seconds.
Ventura's Jimmy May repeated his April 26 win at SMS with
victory in the 25-lap National 3/4 Midget Racing Association (NMRA) feature
event. Kenny Wiley, of Burbank, lead most of the first half of the run before
being passed by May for the lead. Wiley faded to seventh at the finish.
Ventura's Dennis Hart followed May past Wiley and stayed in second to the
checkers. May's teammate, Scott Hansen of Simi Valley, was third and Rob Hansen,
of Ventura, fourth. Moorpark's West Evans rounded out the top-five. May won an
8-lap heat race, as did Walt Johnson, of Burbank, and S. Hansen set fast
time of 15.150 seconds.
Dave Thompson, of Santa Maria, returned to racing last
Saturday after a number of years in retirement. Starting on the outside of the
front row, Thompson led every lap to win the 20-lap Crossroads Community Church
Factory Stock main event. It was an all Santa Maria top-five as David Addamo,
Tim Breshears, point leader Thad Bennett, and Kirk Morgan followed Thompson to
the checkers. Bennett and Scotty Preast, of Santa Maria, captured 8-lap heat
race victories.
Josh Dimaggio took the number 71 Cabrillo High School Factory
Stock to its second consecutive sweep of the 8-lap heat and 10-lap main in the
Jim Vreeland Ford Campus Motorsports division. John Krewitsky drove the Lompoc
High School entry to second in both events and the second Cabrillo car took
third in both events with Jason Collins at the wheel.
Next Saturday night Diamond Jewelry & Loan Street Stocks,
Zeiders Farms Mini Stocks, Crossroads Community Church Factory Stocks, and Jim
Vreeland Ford Campus Motorsports Factory Stocks will all see action.
Spectator gates will open at four with racing at seven. Ticket prices are:
adults $12.00, seniors (65+) $10.00, and children 6 to 12 $3.00.
