Santa Maria, CA - July 26, 2003...Josh Wise, of Riverside, looked like he
would back up his June 28 J.B. Dewar/BAndit Sprint Car feature win with a
victory in the Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA) 30-lap "A" main
event at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night, but it didn't happen. Starting
sixteenth in the 22-car field, Wise blew through the pack to take the lead. But,
with just seven laps to go, Wise hooked a rut in turn four and spun. Wily
veteran Wally Pankratz, of Orange, was in position to take advantage of the
miscue to take the lead and go on to victory. Early leader Glenn Carson, of
Newark, came home second ahead of Newcastle's Greg Nelson. Bobby Boone, of
Palmdale, was fourth, followed by John Sarale of Stockton. Wise, who finished
fifteenth after his spin, set fast time of 13.940 seconds. Wise, Dallen McKenney, of Clovis, and Tyler Brown, of Norco, captured 8-lap heat races and point leader Travis Barryhill, of American Canyon, took the 10-lap "B" main event. Jimmy Thompson, of Arroyo Grande, extended his J.B. Dewar Sprint Car point lead by setting fast time, 14.065 seconds, and going on to win the 30-lap feature event. If Thompson can keep the momentum going, he would become the first driver in Speedway history to win the same division championship four years running. Second in the feature was Fresno's John Burnett with one of his strongest runs of the season and Atascadero's Greg Porte placed third to move into second in local points. Gary Rayburn, Jr., of Grover Beach, and Jeff Fiscus, of Los Osos, rounded out the top-five. Eight-lap heat races were won by A.J. Burgin, of Kingsburg, Aaron Chaney, of Clovis, and Rayburn. Zeiders Farms Mini Stocks were the only fendered race cars on hand Saturday night. For the fourth time in seven races this season it was the Tom Grzincic/Darrin Davis show with Grzincic first and Davis second. The Atascadero teammates extended their gap in the points over third place Scott Fowler, of Santa Maria, who finished fourth. Lompoc's Mike Weigel collected his third place finish and Nipomo's Jeremy Heroux was fifth. Grzincic, Fowler, and David Mullett, of Fresno, were winners in the three 8-lap mini stock heat races. Next Saturday night Classic Rock 99.1 "The Fox" will sponsor an all stock car show with Century 21 Filer Realtors Late Model Stocks, Diamond Jewelry & Loan Street Stocks, Zeiders Farms Mini Stocks, Crossroads Community Church Factory Stocks, and Jim Vreeland Ford Campus Motorsports Factory Stocks all on the schedule. Spectator gates will open at four, with qualifying at six and racing at seven. Admission prices are: adults - $12.00, seniors (65+) - $10.00, and children 6 to 12 - $3.00.
