SANTA MARIA SPEEDWAY RECAP
By: Jim Pluhar

Santa Maria, CA - June 28, 2003... In an event filled with a multitude of yellow and two red flags, the 30-lap J.B. Dewar/Bandit Sprint Car feature event was called complete at the end of 19 laps Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. The second red, for point leader Aaron Altaffer of Tulare, brought about the premature checkered flag. The on-track problems had little effect on Josh Wise, of Riverside, who started sixth, passed early leader
Gary Rayburn, Jr., of Grover Beach, on lap five, and drove away to a convincing victory. Rayburn held on for second and Arroyo Grande's Jimmy Thompson was third. Kingsburg's A.J. Burgin came in fourth and Jeff Fiscus, of Los Osos, fifth. Wise, Thompson, Burgin, and Bakersfield's Rick Gifford all won 8-lap heat races. Gifford flipped in turn one in the feature, bringing out the first red.
The Diamond Jewelry & Loan Street Stocks had the best feature race of the night in their 25-lap run. Nipomo drivers Kenny Kirkpatrick and Willy Oathout bested the rest of the field. It was Kirkpatrick's first feature victory since moving over from the Mini Stock division last season. Kirkpatrick started on the pole and led all the way while Oathout worked his way to second from a third row starting position. Santa Marians Elton
Shaffer and Joey Silva filled the next two spots and Billy Simkins, of Bakersfield, was fifth. Nipomo's Chad Weber and Santa Maria's Joey Claborn captured 8-lap heat races.
It took point leader Scotty Preast just two laps to move from an eighth place start to the lead in the 20-lap Crossroads Community Church Factory Stock feature. Preast lead three other Santa Maria drivers: Thad Bennett, David Addamo, and Tim Breshears to the checkers. Jesse Bowles, of Bakersfield, was fifth in his first visit to the 1/3-mile oval. Breshears and Bennett took the 8-lap heat races.
Next Saturday night the California Rebel Cup Winged 360 Sprint Cars, CarQuest Late Model Tour/Century 21 Filer Realtors Late Model Stocks, and Diamond Jewelry & Loan Street Stocks take to the track.
Spectator gates open at four, with qualifying at six, and racing at seven. Tickets are: adults - $12.00, seniors (65+) - $10.00, and children 6 to 12 - $3.00.
Santa Maria Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road. Their internet address is santamariaspeedway.com.
