Santa Maria, CA - May 31, 2003... No less than seven cars broke the
existing 1-lap record for J.B. Dewar/Bandit Series Sprint Cars Saturday night at
Santa Maria Speedway. Josh Wise, of Riverside, broke it the most, setting the
new mark at 13.574 seconds, for an average speed of around 88 miles-per-hour.
Richard Harvey, Jr., of Hanford, grabbed the lead from pole
position in the 30-lap main event, and led the first twelve laps before being
overtaken by Kingsburg's A.J. Burgin. Burgin was poised for the win despite
constant pressure from Arroyo Grande's Jimmy Thompson. But, on the twenty-fifth
circuit two cars spun in front of the leaders. Thompson went high and Burgin
went low, right into the side of one of the spun competitors. Thompson went on
to victory, followed by Series point leader Aaron Altaffer, of Tulare,
and Wise. Early leader Harvey was fourth and Bobby Elliott, of Fresno, fifth.
Burgin was credited with fourteenth.
Jeff Fiscus, of Los Osos; Altaffer; Greg Porte, of
Atascadero; and Darren Simas, of Santa Maria, all won 8-lap heat races. Fresno's
John Burnett snagged the 12-lap "B" main event and Simas received an
award for "Best Looking Car" in the Sprint Car division.
Diamond Jewelry & Loan Street Stocks ran their first
points race of the season, which means 25-lap feature winner Elton Shaffer, of
Santa Maria, is also the point leader. Nipomo's Kenny Kirkpatrick led most of
the event before Shaffer passed him three laps from the finish. Kirkpatrick
re-passed Shaffer two laps from the end, but on the final lap both Shaffer and
Rick Wilkinson, of Paso Robles, got by to finish one, two, dropping Kirkpatrick
to third. Shaffer and Joey Silva, of Santa Maria, won 8-lap heat races.
A disqualification dropped Santa Maria's David Addamo from an
apparent second place finish behind deffending champion Thad Bennett of Santa
Maria. Four more Santa Maria drivers: Tim Breshears, Tom Breshears, Scotty
Preast, and Justin Cole each moved up a spot to fill the top-5. Tom Breshears
and Preast came away with 8-lap heat race wins.
Next Saturday night Century 21 Filer Realtors Late Model
Stocks, Zeiders Farms Mini Stocks, and Crossroads Community Church Factory
Stocks all see action. Gates open at four with racing at seven. Tickets are:
$12.00 - adults, $10.00 - seniors (65+), $3.00 - children 6 to 12.
The Speedway is 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton
Road.
