Santa Maria, CA - April 26, 2003... Steve Drake, of San Luis Obispo, took
the lead at the drop of the green in the combined CarQuest Western Dirt Late
Model Tour/Century 21 Filer Realtors Late Model Stock 30-lap "A" main
event at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night. Drake held onto the point until lap 27 when a slight bobble in turn two opened the door for Mike Johnson, of Clovis, to slip by for the lead and the win. Drake held on to second place, followed by Devin Crockett, Arroyo Grande; Eric Jacobson, Seacliff; and Mike Collins, Terra Bella. The 12-lap "B" main went to Nick Perivolaris, of Petaluma, and the 8-lap heat races were won by Richard Papenhausen, of Chico, Crockett, Johnson, and John Silva, of Fremont, who broke in the process, missing the "A" main. Papenhausen set fast time of 15.520 seconds. Santa Maria's Danny Sheridan came away a winner in the J.B. Dewar/Bandit non-winged 360 sprint car 30-lap feature. Sheridan out-dueled Atascadero's Greg Porte for the victory and Fresno's John Burnett placed third. Fourth and fifth were Aaron Altaffer, of Tulare, who also won an 8-lap heat and set fast time of 15.240 seconds, and Bobby Elliott. Elliott and Sheridan were victorious in the other two heat races. National Midget Racing Association (NMRA) TQ midgets completed the race card with teammates Jimmy May and Scott Hansen sweeping the top-two spots in identically painted orange TQs. Steve Lambert, of Port Hueneme, was third and set fast time of 16.002 seconds. Fourth went to Chuck West, of Clovis, who also won an 8-lap heat race, and fifth to Burbank's Walt Johnson. Camarillo's Chris Hedge captured the other heat race. Next Saturday night the Century 21 Filer Realtors Late Model Stocks return to the 1/3-mile oval without the Tour. Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and Factory stocks will complete the all stock car lineup. Gates open at four, with qualifying at six and racing at seven. Admission prices are: adults - $12.00, seniors (65+) - $10.00, and children 6 to 12 - $3.00.
