KAEDING WELL PLACED FOR 3RD STRAIGHT WIN
By: Robert Mayson

PERRIS, CA, NOVEMBER 14, 2003 - Two-time and defending Budweiser Oval
Nationals Champion Bud Kaeding backed-up his runner-up finish last night with a 25-lap preliminary feature win of his own Friday at the Perris Auto Speedway.

After turning the fastest qualifying lap in time trials, Kaeding charged from the sixth starting spot to not only win the race, but also extend his lead in the Non-Wing World Championship (NWWC) series.  Heading into Saturday's 50-lap finale, Kaeding enjoys a 44-point lead over Cory Kruseman.

"We're in a really good position to win the Non-Wing World Championship.  We just need to keep our nose clean tomorrow night and get a good finish.  We're leading the points, so I guess we've got a better shot than anyone at winning this deal," Kaeding grinned.

Jeremy Sherman and Tracy Hines occupied the front row for the race.  As Hines jumped into the lead, Western World Champion Tony Elliott slowed to a stop forcing a complete restart.  Adam Mitchell, who started tenth, was the biggest benefactor of the yellow flag.  Mitchell had fallen to last place after hitting the wall on the opening lap, but was able to restart near the front and eventually finish sixth.

Hines again put the Cory Witherill / WSA Health Care #61X TCR into the lead on the start and would lead Sherman, Kaeding, Kruseman and Tony Jones at the end of the opening lap.   After a four-lap tussle with Sherman, Kaeding secured the second position for his BK Racing / Loan City #29K Maxim on the sixth lap.  All the while, Hines was able to enjoy a relatively comfortable lead.

With J.J. Yeley now up to third, Jones offered up a big slide job for Sherman to take over the third position on lap 11.  One lap later, Troy Rutherford slowed with a flat tire to bring out the caution flag.

Kaeding slipped under Hines coming down for the green flag on the restart. His pass would, however, be negated after Jones bicycled and slapped the turn one wall.  Coming down for the green flag on the next restart, Kaeding again passed Hines for the lead, and this time, would be able to keep it.

Yeley put his Tony Stewart Mopar #20 Twister ahead of Hines with less than ten laps to go and immediately went to work on running down Kaeding.  Yeley caught and attempted to pass Kaeding exiting turn four on lap 19.  Damion Gardner had been fighting a broken shock for several laps, but his handling problems worsened, sending him helplessly into the turn three wall.

Kaeding withstood Yeley's many challenges after racing resumed and appeared to be on his way to another Perris victory when he received the yellow flag exiting turn four on what would have been the final lap of the race.  Despite his frustration, Kaeding went on to win the race after rerunning the final lap of the race.  The victory helped give Kaeding the most combined points for the two preliminary nights, making him the first recipient of the  Dean Thompson Award.

"It seems like every time I'm leading here, someone spins-out on the last lap coming down for the checkered flag," Kaeding later complained.  "I knew J.J. would be gunning for me because he tried it a few times before getting into turn one.  On the restart, I just avoided the bumps getting into turn one and got on the throttle.  That white and black #20 has been chasing me all year, I'm just glad I was able to pull off the victory tonight."

Brent Kaeding thrilled the fans in the closing laps driving his BK Racing #69 to third after starting 17th.  Hines finished fourth ahead of Tony Stewart's other entry driven by Kruseman.
