PERRIS, CA, NOVEMBER 13, 2003 - Jac Haudenschild kicked off the 8th Annual
Budweiser Oval Nationals by driving his Larry Woodward / Racetohawaii.com #4H
Maxim to an impressive 25-lap preliminary main event win.
With four California Racing Association wins to his credit, as well as a 1999
Non-Wing World Championship (NWWC) win at Knoxville Raceway and a win in the
Mopar Million earlier this year, Haudenschild is definitely no stranger to
wingless racing. Still, Thursday's race presented some challenges, since
it was the first time in his illustrious career that he has run the Perris Auto
Speedway without a wing.
"We've run some non-winged races this year and we changed the car around a
little, and my guys had the car perfect. Driving these cars without a wing
is a whole different style of driving, but I really enjoy it," said
Haudenschild, eyeing Saturday's potential $30,000 payday. "The big
money race is what we're out here for. The big money draws all the big
drivers. There's a lot of good guys out here and we've still got to run
good for two more nights."
There was drama even before the 24-car field had an opportunity to properly
line-up for the start, after NWWC point leader Cory Kruseman was black-flagged
for pushing off with a rear wheel cover that was not properly secured.
Kruseman was slated to start fourth, but instead was sent to the rear.
Kruseman would go on to finish 13th, but would lose his NWWC point lead by
night's end.
Outside front row starter Mike Spencer beat Haudenschild into the first turn at
the start of the race as Jason York, Bud Kaeding and defending NWWC Champ
Richard Griffin gave chase.
After nearly making it work the lap before, Haudenschild blasted ahead of the
Hal Engstrom / Goudy Wheels #44 driven by Spencer. Third-place Kaeding had
been stalking the leaders for a couple of laps and finally moved his BK Racing /
Loan City #29K Maxim ahead of Spencer one circuit later.
Kaeding nearly pulled of a brilliant outside pass for the lead in turn two on
the 13th lap, but skated just a little too wide to beat Haudenschild off the
corner. Haudenschild reached lapped traffic for the first time on the 18th
lap with Kaeding still glued to his tail tank. Haudenschild bobbled
slightly on lap 22 giving Kaeding his best chance to steal the lead. Just
when it appeared that Kaeding was going to take the top spot, a lapped car
blocked his path allowing Haudenschild to move back ahead of him.
Haudenschild nearly brushed the back straightaway wall on the final lap of the
race, affording the defending Oval Nationals Champion one last opportunity. Driving
down to the bottom of turn four, Kaeding was nearly even with Haudenschild
exiting the corner, but would come up just short of beating him to the checkered
flag. Kaeding would, however, leave with the NWWC point lead.
Spencer, who finished fifth in last year's 100-lap Oval Nationals finale,
finished third ahead of Jose Wise, Damion Gardner and J.J. Yeley. John
Scott was the fastest of 63 cars in time trials and went on to finish seventh in
the main event.
