YELEY SIZZLES AT THE ACTION TRACK
By: Robert Mayson

TERRE HAUTE, IN, AUGUST 14, 2003 - J.J. Yeley continues to rewrite the USAC
record books.  Thursday's co-sanctioned 30-lap race with the NAPA Auto Parts / Auto Trader Magazines SCRA sprint car series resulted in Yeley's 21st USAC win of the year.

"This has been great," Yeley said, after also adding his fifth career win to the Non-Wing World Championship (NWWC) record books.  "I know it's not the same as when A.J. (Foyt) did it back in 1961.  Fortunately, I wasn't around then and I don't have to race against him now.  I know this is a modern-day record, but hopefully we can run this thing up to where it's 60 or 70 years before someone breaks this record."

JE Piston Dash winner Cory Kruseman shared the front row with Yeley to make it an all Tony Stewart owned Mopar / Twister front row.  Kruseman and Yeley swapped the lead through turns one and two on the start before "The Kruser" pulled ahead on the back straight.  Tony Elliott's Jeff Walker / Murray's Body Shop #11X Twister ran third ahead of Sander Engineering Fast Timer Tracy Hines and Jon Stanbrough at the end of the first lap.

Finding the bottom to his liking, Elliott passed Yeley exiting turn two on the fifth lap.  One lap later, Elliot slipped past Kruseman for the lead. Shortly after Yeley had taken over the second position, Damion Gardner and Charles Davis, Jr. slid to a stop in turn four to bring out the second caution flag of the race on lap 15.

Not that he needed the help, Yeley took full advantage of the restart and used the turn two cushion to overtake Elliott down the back straight.  Once out front, Yeley simply ran away from Elliott en route to what appeared to be a relatively easy victory.

"I knew where I needed to be," Yeley confidently stated.  "Under the yellow (flag) I was just kind of rolling around there and I knew the bottom is only fast here when there's nothing on the top.  As good as the cushion was good getting in and getting off, I knew that it was only a matter of time before the little bit that was left getting off the corners (on the bottom) was going to wear away."

"I made some adjustments on the car and those last ten laps were great.  I just can't say enough about the Mopar / Twister car.  We've been really good here (at Terre Haute) and we've been doing a lot of experimenting lately.  Tonight, we tried some stuff and it seemed to work out pretty good.  Maybe we can come back here at the end of the year and pick up another win."

Stanbrough continues to enjoy the best season of his career, and with a late-race surge, moved his Hazen Motorsports #57 Stealth ahead of Kruseman and Hines to earn a third place finish.  Troy Rutherford had a busy night.  Transferring out of the C-Main, Rutherford earned a spot in the feature after a 18th to 6th place run in the Simpson B-Main.  Starting 22nd in the finale, Rutherford's seventh-place finish was the highest amongst the SCRA regulars that traveled east.  Rutherford was rewarded with the KSE Products Hard Charger Award for his efforts.
