OSKALOOSA, IA, AUGUST 12, 2003 - Twenty year-old Boston Reid dominated
Tuesday's Ultimate Non-Winged Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway and took home
a
check for $30,000 after winning his first career NAPA Auto Parts / Auto Trader
Magazines SCRA feature race.
"To win against the SCRA and USAC guys is unreal", Reid said with a
youthful smile. "These are the best guys in the country and for a young guy
like myself to be hooked up with a couple of guys like Scott Benic and Bill
Davis is a dream come true."
The opening event of the Non-Winged World Championship (NWWC) series was
marred by an accident in the C-Main that took the life of driver Keith Hutton.
A native of Queensland, Australia, Hutton relocated several years ago to
Knoxville, where he had served as a mechanic for Don Droud, Jr., Randy Hannigan,
and most recently, Clint Garner. An infrequent competitor over the last
few years, Hutton recently finished third behind Jimmy Sills and Roger Rager in
the Masters Classic at Knoxville Raceway. Hutton was 53 years old.
"This was the first time when I had been through a night like
tonight," Reid later said of the tragic accident. "Winning this
race makes things really hit home and makes you proud of what you've done
because things can always happen. Whether you're out on the street or in a
race car, it doesn't matter. You have to cherish deals like this."
JE Pistons Dash winner Jay Drake shared the front row with Tony Elliott for the
30-lap feature race that was billed as the "One night stand for thirty
grand." Reid started third and launched off the low-groove moisture
exiting the fourth corner.
Heading into turn one, Reid darted his Lucas Oil #2B Maxim past the front row
starters and into the lead. Drake occupied the second position at the end
of the opening lap with the Tony Stewart / Mopar #20 Twister driven by Yeley
running third ahead of Damion Gardner and Elliott.
As Reid enjoyed a half straight-away lead, Yeley relieved Drake of the second
position during the ninth circuit. The only caution period of the race
came three laps later after defending race winner Travis Rilat slowed to a stop
on the racing surface.
From the time starter Lee Jaskowiak dropped the green cloth to restart the race,
Reid's victory was never in doubt. Yeley gave chase, and tried several
different lines hoping to run down Reid, but in the end, would lose second place
to KSE Hard Charger Award winner Matt Westfall. Swapping the running-up
spot on a couple of occasions with Yeley, Westfall, who started 13th in
his Steve Simon / Smokey's Building Trusses #23S Maxim, nailed down the position
for good on the 29th lap.
Gardner carried the torch for the SCRA hopefuls by driving the Harlan Willis /
TCR Performance #45 to a fourth-place finish. Like Westfall, Jac
Haudenschild thrilled the crowd with a spectacular 14th to fifth place run in
the Larry Woodward / RaceToHawaii.com #4 Maxim.
Wayne Johnson was another driver that put on a show. After driving from
ninth to first in the Simpson Products B-Main event, Johnson finished sixth in
the A-Main after starting 16th. With 67 drivers from 15 different states
and Australia on hand, Tracy Hines posted the quickest lap In Sander Engineering
Time Trials, touring the ½ mile dirt track in 20.202 seconds.
