LAKEWOOD, CA., April 29 -- With a heavy heart, the NAPA Auto
Parts / Auto
Trader Magazines Sprint Car Racing Association (SCRA) series makes it's first
Ventura Raceway appearance of the year this Saturday night (May 3rd) with the
annual running of the Jeff Bagley Classic .
Jeff, who was the 1988 CRA Rookie of the Year, lost his life in 1989 driving a
sprint car at Ascot Park (Gardena). Tragically, Jeff's parents, Paul (74)
and Helen Bagley (72), Hesperia, were killed last Saturday at the Perris Auto
Speedway after being struck by the car driven by Jack DeArmond, Jr. (Corona).
DeArmond's car made contact with another car at the start of the B-Main
Event and flipped high into the air, clearing the infield catch-fence before
striking the Bagleys. DeArmond sustained fractures in his back, neck
and ribs in the accident, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Four-time defending SCRA Champion Richard Griffin (Silver City, NM) leads local
favorite Troy Rutherford (Ojai) by ten points heading into the weekend (452 to
442). Having won three of the last four SCRA main events, Damion Gardner
(Concord) enters the weekend as the hottest driver on the SCRA tour. Gardner
is third in series points (with 395).
