Phoenix, AZ (March 25)
Fresh off his fourth straight major race win, Jeremy Sherman should
be a factor in Saturday night's Arizona Sprint Car Association race on Manzanita
Speedway's one third mile track. After winning the 360 c.i. sprint car portion
of last year's NAPA/Budweiser Western and then capturing both ends of the Sprint
Car events and one of the Midget races in the Desert Classic, Sherman made one
of his patented great drives to take his second straight Gary Sokola Classics
last week. While waiting for an engine for the Dave Ellis sprinter Sherman will
again drive the Stacy Fuller car Saturday night. He made one of his famous
charges in the season opener as he came 15th to fourth in the Fuller car.
A couple of other drivers who showed their ability in the Sokola race, Charles
Davis, Jr. and Bob Ream, Jr. will also be part of the field. Davis equaled his
best ever SCRA finish when he placed second to Richard Griffin last Friday night
as he bested a star studded field that included SCRA points leader Troy
Rutherford, USAC champion Tracy Hines, USAC driver of the year J.J. Yeley to
name a few. He ran near the front in the Saturday feature until slower traffic
caused a spin but he drove back to finish 12th. Ream turned in a near track
record qualifying run Friday night, won the semi and finished fourth in the
feature then took tenth Saturday night. Davis will be at the wheel of the Fred
and Evelyn Bryan car while Ream will move from his Mopar powered car to the
Monte Taylor car that he drove in the season opener. Davis and Ream were
involved in a skirmish that sidelined them in the opener.
Marty Miller, the 2000 champion and five time champion Ricky Johnson, one-two in
the opener, should offer another test to the rest of the field including third
place finisher Brandon Lane and Kaylene Verville who finished fifth. Eric
Wilkins and Terry Belcher, Jr. will be trying to reverse their fortunes as
Wilkins sucked a valve in the Meixsell/Wooldrige Buckley in the opener while
Belcher was disqualified after running third when his fuel injection system
failed inspection.
The youngsters will be taking center stage in the Arizona Midget Racing
Association opener as R.J. Johnson and Justin Fisher, a couple of high school
sophomores, hope to repeat their one-two finish in last year's points chase. The
two will also be racing in the Sprint division. Sherman will be the driver to
beat as he pulls double duty and will be at the wheel of the potent Dave Ellis
entry.
Former champions David Birmingham, Jr. and Steve Sussex, Jr. hope to get off to
a quick start. Terry Palmer, a former Dwarf Car champion and winner of the Mini
Sprint Western World Championship, will make his debut in the Midgets.
The Mini Sprints, headed by Palmer, Jeff Greszler, Charles Mokry and Dustin
Carmony are also on the Saturday night card.
