David Cardey Wins Season Opener! |

Perris, CA February 22, 2003 - David Cardey kicked off the 2003 season
with a win in front of a packed house full of World Of Outlaw fans! The victory
didn't come easy as he battled for position among the top 3 for most of the 20
laps. After grabbing the hole-shot at the drop of the green flag and leading the
first 5 laps Cardey was penalized 2 positions when the caution flew (for passing
before the starting cone). The lead was surrendered to Doug Hunting. Hunting
took advantage of the 2nd place battle between Cardey and Daren Hagen and opened
up a sizeable lead. Cardey held 2nd place for the next several laps although the
spot went back and forth between Hagen & Cardey several times.
A welcome caution flag waved on lap 9 erasing Hunting's lead. Upon the restart a 3 way battle for the lead ensued going three-wide into turn 1 when Hunting went high, Cardey went low, and Hagen drove through the middle. Hagen's gamble nearly payed off but Hunting maintained his momentum to lead by the corner's exit. The three way battle briefly became 4 as Greg Dennett pulled alongside the group to challenge. Hunting again built a lead on the field until lap 15 when he developed engine trouble. Dennett dropped off the pace on the same lap & retired 3 laps later. Cardey found himself once again in the lead and drove to victory ahead of Darren Hagen and 10th place starter Brent Sexton. Jonny Bates and Donny Gansen rounded out the top 5.
