Williams Breaks Griffin's String |

Santa Maria, CA - September 21, 2002...SCRA Non-Winged Sprint Cars, WRA Vintage Midgets and Sprints, and Mini Stocks were on the 1/3-mile oval Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. Rip Williams finally ended Richard Griffin's string of SCRA wins at SMS. Silver City, New Mexico's Griffin, who won the last three local 30-lap SCRA "A" feature events dating back to 2001, finished fourth. Williams' victory didn't come easy. The Yorba Linda driver was dogged all the way by Damion Gardner, of Concord, with Steve Ostling, of Corona, third. Fifth was Josh Wise, of Riverside, who set fast time of 13.702 seconds. Ten-lap heat races were won by: Gary W. Howard, of Fontana; Troy Rutherford, of Ojai; and, Danny Sharidan of Santa Maria. Mike English, of Norwalk, captured the 12-lap "B" main event and Griffin the 6-lap JE Pistons Passing Masters Dash. The Mini Stock championship couldn't be much closer going into their final points race of the season next Saturday night. Second place Tom Grzincic, of Atascadero, just managed to slip by point leader Brad Smith, of Lompoc, two laps from the end of the 20-lap main event to move to within six points of the championship. After Anthony Melin, of Arroyo Grande, was given a mechanical disqualification, Jenise Ferrara, also of A.G., was awarded third; Ben Caswell, of Santa Barbara, fourth; and Scott Fowler, of Santa Maria, fifth. Smith, and Atascadero drivers Darrin Davis and Frank Clyburn, captured the 8-lap heat races. The Western Racing Association (WRA) entertained the crowd with exhibition racing in their vintage midgets and sprints from the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Next Saturday night the 25th annual Bill Baker Memorial will bring Late Model Stocks, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Factory Stocks to the Speedway. Gates open at four, qualifying begins at six, and racing is scheduled for seven. Regular admission prices of: adults - $11.00, seniors (65+) - $8.00, and children 6 to 12 - $3.00 will be charged.
