Santa Maria, CA - August 24, 2002...BCRA/USAC Midgets, USAC Ford Focus
Midgets, and J.B. Dewar/Bandit Sprint Cars brought plenty of open-wheeled race
car action to Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.
Josh Wise, of Riverside, brought the Dino Tomassi owned,
Mopar powered Beast chassis midget from the tenth starting position to victory
in the 30-lap midget main event. Once in the lead Wise pulled away from second
place finisher Bobby Boone, of Palmdale, and third place Danny Stratton of
Fontana. Jimmy Christian, of Morgan Hill, and Robby Flock, of Temecula, placed
fourth and fifth.
Wally Pankratz, of Orange, and Mike Simpson, of Apple Valley, captured the
10-lap heat races, and Wise set fast time of 13.866 seconds.
Garrett Hansen's Ford Focus Stealth took the measure of the
rest of the competitors in that division in their 20-lap run. The Rancho Palos
Verdes driver passed third place finisher Phil Goodwine, of Mira Loma, on the
third circuit and went on to victory circle. Dallen McKinney, of Clovis, was
second and Chino Hills' Todd Hunsaker and Lakewood's J.J. Ercse completed the
top-five. Goodwine and Hunsaker won the 6-lap heat races and McKinney set fast
time of 15.240 seconds.
Visalia's Aaron Altaffer continued his roll, recording his
second straight win at SMS and third in-a-row in the J.B. Dewar/Bandit Series.
Altaffer outdistanced Nipomo's Jimmy Thompson, Hanford's Richard Harvey, Jr.,
Santa Maria's Danny Sheridan, and Arroyo Grande's Wade Griest in the 30-lap
feature event. Sheridan, Griest, and Greg Porte, of Atascadero, captured the
8-lap heat races and fast time, of 14.153 seconds, was set by
Gene Manhire of Fresno.
Next Saturday a Labor Day weekend extravaganza is
scheduled for the 1/3-mile oval, headlined by the 12th Annual Budweiser Don
Roberts Grand Prix for Street Stocks. IMCA legal Modified have been added to the
program. Each division winner will receive $1000.00. The evening will also
include Mini Stocks and Crossroads Community Church Factory Stocks, including
the Campus Motorsports Program entries.
Gates open at four with qualifying at six, and racing to
follow.
Admission prices are: $13.00 for adults, $11.00 for seniors (65+), and $3.00 for
children 6 to 12.
Santa Maria Speedway is 1/4-mile north of the 101/166
interchange on Hutton Road. They're on the internet at SantaMariaSpeedway.com.
