Santa Maria, CA - August 3, 2002... Aaron Altaffer, of Visalia, became only the
third different local winner in the J.B. Dewar/Bandit 360 Non-Winged Sprint Car Series
Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. Altaffer started eleventh in the eighteen car
30-lap main event and worked his way into the lead on the sixth circuit. From there on it was all Altaffer as he scored his initial feature victory.
Nipomo's Jimmy Thompson secured second place on lap nineteen, and point leader Gene Manhire, of Fresno, finished third.
Fourth went to Santa Maria's Steve DeMott and fifth to fast qualifier (15.442 seconds) Derrick Hearron of
Bakersfield. Thompson and Santa Maria drivers Mike Knopf and Darren Simas won 8-lap heat races.
Doug Jeffers, of Nipomo, captured his first career 30-lap Late Model Stock main
event victory. Jeffers had to fight off point leader Steve Drake, of San Luis Obispo,
for the last two-thirds of the race. Craig Gardner, of Paso Robles, had a strong
run to come home third. Randy Claborn, driving Pete Van Iderstine's car, was fourth and Rick Coffey fifth.
Both drivers are from Santa Maria. Coffey and Lompoc's Chet Buckley took 8-lap heat wins and Drake set his third fast time of
the season, 16.122 seconds.
Street Stocks also had a two-car battle in their 20-lap feature event. But, in the
end, it was Brandon Cortner scoring his fourth consecutive victory over fellow Santa Marian Tim Randolph. Randolph held Cortner off for the first seven laps,
but on lap eight the point leader got by and drove off to victory. Santa Maria's
Elton Shaffer was third, when the checkered waved, with Atascadero's Rick Wilkinson fourth and Santa Maria's Joey Silva fifth. Wilkinson and Silva won 8-lap
heat races.
Next Saturday night the Sunny Country 102.5/CarQuest Late Model Tour is on
