Santa Maria, CA - June 29, 2002...J.B. Dewar/Bandit 360 Sprint Cars
highlighted the racing program Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.
Fresno's Gene Manhire started on the pole for the 30-lap main event and led
every circuit on the way to victory. Bakersfield's Tom Stansberry finished a
strong second with Camarillo's Josh Ford third, Arroyo Grande's Wade Griest
fourth, and Hanford's Richard Harvey, Jr. fifth. Ron Bach, of Ventura, won the
12-lap "B" main event and 8-lap heat races were captured by: Sherman
May, Taft; Stansberry; A.J. Burgin, Kingsburg; and Greg Porte, Atascadero.
Brandon Cortner came from his fourth starting position
to pass fellow Santa Maria driver Billy Simkins on lap 10 of the 20-lap Street
Stock feature to score his second consecutive win. Nipomo's Larry Mickey came
home second, followed by Carpinteria's Ed Perry. Chad Weber and Tim Randolph,
both of Santa Maria, placed fourth and fifth. Randolph, Atascadero's Rick
Wilkinson, and Cortner won the 8-lap heat races.
Brad Smith, of Lompoc, took the win in the 20-lap Mini
Stock main event and, in the process, took over the point lead in the
division. Mike Weigel, of Lompoc, finished second and David McMullen, of
Nipomo, was third. Jeremy Heroux, of Nipomo, and Scott Fowler, of Santa Maria,
completed the top-five. Tom Grzincic, Darrin Davis, both of Atascadero, and
Weigel scored 8-lap heat race victories.
Factory Stocks completed the four division evening with
Santa Maria's Kirk Morgan scoring his first career main event win. Tim
Breshears, also of Santa Maria, was the runner-up, after winning the previous
two main events. Arroyo Grande's Gary Rayburn, Sr. was third, followed by Ray
Sayre, of Goleta, and Lorinda Kearns of Santa Maria. Morgan and Garold
Shaffer, of Santa Maria, won 8-lap heats.
Next Saturday night we'll get our first look of the
season at the California Rebel Cup Winged 360 Sprint Cars. They'll be joined
by Late Model Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Factory Stocks.
Spectator gates will open at four, qualifying begins at six, and racing
at seven. Admission prices are: $11.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors (65+),
and $3.00 for children 6 to 12. Santa Maria Speedway
is 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road. Their web address
