Santa Maria, CA - June 1, 2002... Thirty-two J.B. Dewar/Bandit Sprint
Cars, twenty-one USAC Western States and Ford Focus Midgets, and fourteen
Factory
Stocks converged on Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.
The 30-lap midget main event was cut to 20 laps due to the
length of the program. Ronnie Day, of Salinas, led the early laps before being
passed by Josh Wise, of Riverside, on lap 14. Point leader Shane Scully, of
Northridge, moved to the point four laps from the finish, but wily veteran
Wally Pankratz battled by him on the very next lap and went on to his
seventeenth career USAC Midget victory. Danny Stratton, of Fontana, was second
followed by: Dallen McKenny, Clovis; Bobby Boone, Palmdale; and Dean
Alexander. Boone, Scully, and Steve Williams won the 8-lap heat races and Wise
set fast time of 13.819 seconds.
Garrett Andrews, of Vacaville, won the first 10-lap Ford
Focus Midget heat race but crashed hard in a frightening end-over-end flip in
the second heat. The event was called complete on lap seven, and Andrews was
transported to a local hospital for observation. J.J. Ercse, of Lakewood,
captured the main event which was shortened to 8 laps. Second was Garrett
Hansen, Rancho Palos Verdes, followed by: Randi Pankratz, Paso Robles; Steve
Lambert, Port Hueneme; and Todd Hunsaker, Chino Hills. Josh Lakatos, of
Pasadena, turned the quick lap of 15.328 seconds.
Richard Harvey, Jr., of Hanford, led the majority of the
30-lap J.B. Dewar/Bandit Sprint Car "A" main event. But, when push
came to shove, Davey Pombo, of Kerman, worked his way from his eighth starting
position, in the 24-car field, to score his second straight victory at SMS.
Harvey held on for second, with Taft's Sherman May making an impressive drive
to third. Greg Porte, of Atascadero, was fourth and Nipomo's Jimmy Thompson
fifth. Eight-lap heat races were taken by: Josh Davis, Atascadero; Wade Griest,
Arroyo Grande; May; and A.J. Burgin, Kingsburg. Derrick Hearron, of
Bakersfield won the 12-lap "B" main event and fast time, 14.346
seconds, was set by Danny Sheridan of Santa Maria.
Scotty Preast, of Santa Maria, had a perfect night in the
Factory Stock division, winning an 8-lap heat race and the 20-lap main event.
Garold Shaffer and Kelly Pusley, both of Santa Maria, were second and third.
Goleta's Ray Sayre and Atascadero's Ron Wesney were fourth and fifth. Gary
Rayburn, Jr., of Grover Beach, won the other heat race in a head-to-head
battle with his father Gary Rayburn, Sr. of Arroyo Grande.
Next Saturday night Late Model Stocks, Street Stocks, Mini
Stocks and Factory Stock will be on the track for an all stock car show.
Admission prices will be: $11.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors 65 and over,
and $3.00 for children 6 to 12. Spectator gates will open at four with
qualifying at six and racing at seven. The Speedway is
located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road. They're on
the internet at SantaMariaSpeedway.com.
