PERRIS, CA, OCTOBER 31, 2002 - After seven runner-up finishes this season, Steve
Ostling finally made it to the top of the podium thanks to a wire-to-wire 20 lap
preliminary win to kickoff the 7th Annual Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply /
Budweiser Oval Nationals Thursday at the Perris Auto Speedway.
"We had a lot of seconds and it was time to win one," Ostling said
after his Halloween night win. "We needed a win bad because I've been
taking a lot of ribbing from everyone asking me every week when I'm going to win
one. Any win is good, but it's nice to win on a night when there was over
60 cars in the pits and guys from everywhere, and a lot of real good
shoes."
Driving the Fischer Motorsports / Stress Relief Engineering No. 29 Okie, Ostling
started on the outside of the front row next to pole-sitter Mike Faria.
Getting the lead at the drop of the green flag, Ostling was followed by Faria,
Richard Griffin, Damion Gardner, Rickie Gaunt and J.J. Yeley at the completion
of the opening lap.
While Faria was under attack from the Ron Chaffin / Madra Produce No. 50 Jon Boy
driven by Griffin, his brother, Danny Faria, Jr., was involved in an incident
that resulted in a flip exiting turn four. Tony Jones and Cary Faas were
also involved. Happily, there were no injuries.
There were more problems for the Faria family on the lap-two restart, after Mike
bicycled in turn three before falling to the eighth position. The seventh
place car driven by Texan Travis Rilat lost its hood two laps later, creating a
caution period.
Gaunt had just moved his Alexander Truck No. 4 Stinger ahead of Gardner for
third when the caution flag flew on lap 15 for a tangle that involved Tracy
Hines, Faria and Brent Kaeding in turn two.
Once racing resumed, the power steering problem Gardner had been fighting since
the fifth lap, lead to other mechanical problems that resulted in a premature
end to a promising evening during which he broke Gaunt's one-lap track record
with a time of 15.954. From there, Ostling pulled away from Griffin
and went on to score a comfortable win. Gaunt finished third ahead of
Yeley and rookie sensation Josh Wise.
"My car was a rocket tonight. I think if I would have ever been able
to run full throttle, that I would have done a wheelie the entire length of the
straightaway. Every once in a while you get a car that's so fast you don't
feel like anyone has a chance to catch you, and that's the way I felt tonight.
," Ostling said after notching his second Non Winged World
Championship (NWWC) win.
