KAEDING 20/20 IN LAKESIDE PRELIM
By: Robert Mayson

KANSAS CITY, KS, AUGUST 16, 2002 - In just his seventh race back from a horrific crash last May, Bud Kaeding drove his BK Motorsports / High Five Pizza No. 29K Maxim to an impressive 20-lap preliminary Non-Winged World Championship (NWWC) victory Friday at Lakeside Speedway.

As if often the case in racing circles, the rumors about Kaeding's eye injuries were greatly exaggerated.  In fact, it was said by many that Kaeding's career was over.  Happily, Kaeding has proven even before his victory that he's sight is good enough to compete with the nation's best.

"I think I hit more cars when I could see," joked Kaeding.  "Until two weeks ago, I didn't think I was going to race again this year.  Fortunately, my insurance company sent me to a retina specialist in California, who put me through all the same tests, and more, as that other doctor in Indiana, and I passed all the tests.  Had I not been sent to the doctor in California, I guess I would have been sitting on the couch tonight instead of being out
here winning a race."

Kaeding, who also won the JE Pistons Dash, jumped into the lead at the drop of the green.  J.J. Yeley moved ahead of outside front row starter Richard Griffin entering turn one and slid into the second position.  Griffin stayed in the gas, however, and squeezed his Ron Chaffin / Arizona Race Mart No. 50 Jon Boy between Yeley and the cushion and took back the runner-up spot.

One lap later, Kaeding skated wide in turn three and nearly rubbed the concrete.  Kaeding managed to keep his tires off the wall, but would relinquish the lead to Griffin.  Quickly atoning for his mistake, Kaeding took back the lead on lap four after a well timed turn four slid-job.  Kaeding comfortably maintained his lead until lap nine when Jesse Hockett and
John Scott tangled exiting turn four.  With his front end broken from the contact, Hockett's car veered helplessly into the infield and struck a light-pole.  Hockett was not hurt in the incident.

Kaeding pulled away from Griffin after the restart until he reached slower traffic on lap 16.  Griffin instantly pulled to within a few feet on Kaeding's rear nerf bar.  Just when it looked like "The Gasman" was setting up Kaeding for a last lap slid-job, the yellow flag waved for Levi Jones, who lost a left rear tire two laps from the finish.

Despite having a lapped car bewteen himself and Kaeding on the restart, Griffin was able to try a turn one slider on lap 19.  Ready for the challenged, Kaeding held his line on the cushion and was able to keep Griffin from sliding ahead of him.  From there, Kaeding was able to become the seventh eighth different NAPA Auto Parts / Auto Trader Magazines SCRA main event winner in as many races.

The ABC Sand & Rock No. 76 Twister, driven by Yeley, finished third ahead of Damion Gardner, who broke the one-lap track record (16.732) during Sander Engineering Time Trials.  Illinois driver Blake Feese finished fifth in his first SCRA/NWWC start.   NWWC point leader, Cory Kruseman, was sixth.
