Over 100 Non Winged Sprint Cars in Manzanita Western
By: Windy McDonald

Phoenix, AZ (October 30) One of the largest fields of non winged Sprint Cars in recent history will be converging at Manzanita Speedway for the November 7, 8 and 9 running of the NAPA Auto Parts/Budweiser Western World Championships and the field is loaded with big name drivers. Over 50 SCRA and USAC drivers will be racing all three nights on Manzy's half mile track while another 50-60 360 c.i. Sprinters race on the third mile track Friday and Saturday night. To make it even better, 25-35 Mini Sprints are also on the card and will be running the short track Thursday and Saturday nights.

The annual SCRA vs USAC challenge has an entry list that reads like a "Who's Who" of Sprint Car Racing. Representing USAC will be the 2002 Stoops Freightliner Sprint champion Tracy Hines; last year's sprint champ and 2002 Silver Crown titlist J.J. Yeley; former Sprint Car champion Tony Elliott; Midget points leader Dave Darland as well as Bud Kaeding, Levi Jones and Brian Tyler. Then add Jerry Coons, Jr. who was eighth in the Silver Crown standings and New Jersey's Billy Pauch and Travis Rilat of Texas and the east and midwest are well represented.

Jeremy Sherman, the defending Western World champion, defending SCRA champ Cory Kruseman, three time champion Richard Griffin and all of SCRA's top ten will try to maintain their dominance over the invaders. They can expect help from former Arizona champions  Charles Davis, Jr. and Bob Ream, Jr.

The 360 races, under the sponsorship of yrurenting.com and DMC Financial brings together a strong  field that includes Davis, Ream, 2002 Arizona champion Eric Wilkins, 1997 champion Josh Pelkey, five time Arizona titlist Ricky Johnson, Colorado's Keith Rauch, California's Josh Ford, Kyle Hancock, Tony Everhart, Chris Tramel and Mark Deskovick, Jay Ervine of Las Vegas and New Mexico's John Ziehl..

The Western will also mark the sprint car debut of midget champion R.J. Johnson, who at 15 years of age is the youngest driver to ever claim a championship in an adult division. He is the son of Ricky Johnson.

Terry Palmer, Charles Mokry, Dustin Carmony, Duane Adams, Mark Stroh, Danny Mathus, Dave Alexander, Mike Kuemper and Scott Pasmore are among the Mini Sprint drivers entered in their part of the Western.

Tickets remain available and reservations may be placed at 602 276-7575.
