Manzanita Speedway will be hosting its first USAC Sprint Car race since 1985 and
only the fourth such event ever at the Phoenix track on September 1st. Former
winners of USAC Sprint Car races at Manzy include Mario Andretti (1966)
and Lealand McSpadden, Bob East and Ricky Hood in 1985. The only other USAC
sanctioned Sprint Car races in the Phoenix area were run at Phoenix
International Raceway. A.J. Foyt and Don Branson each won 50 lappers at PIR in
1964 and Chet Fillip won a 25 mile race there in 1997.
The Manzanita race is part of the USAC Arizona/New Mexico series and will be
promoted by USAC Race Director Hal Burns who has rented the facility for the
race. The race is the final race on the USAC Labor Day Championship series with
stops August 30th at Albuquerque, NM and Saturday in Showlow, AZ.
The Manzanita outing marks the first race on the Arizona/New Mexico regional
series that will be contested on a half mile track. In addition to such
drivers as points leader Mike Boat and Mike Martin of Arizona, the field is
expected to also have former winners Tom Ball and Rick Ziehl of New Mexico going
after the win. Bob Ream, a regular with the Arizona Sprints may also be testing
the visitors at his home track. Kaylene Verville won an earlier race on the USAC
tour and may be on hand to try for a repeat. Tim West has also won on the
circuit while Boat is the only double winner through the first six races.
In addition to the full show and 30 main event, the top 16 cars in points from
the previos two events will be automatically entered in a special 20 lap
"Shootout" running for another regular purse. The top four in
qualifying will also earn berths in the shootout. To qualify for the Shootout,
cars must run all three races over the Labor Day weekend.
