CRA/Ascot Park Track Records - 1 Lap
|
|
Ascot ran its first race June 1st, 1957, at the time it was
called the Los Angeles Speedway. 3 Time Champion, Nick Valenta was quick time with a 24.63
in a Dodge V8 owned by Lee Knox. CRA Champion Harry Stockman with a Chrysler V8
owned by Lester Robinson, was the first driver in the 23 second bracket. CRA
Champion Colby Scroggin in a Desoto V8 owned by Don Blair was the first driver
into the 22 second bracket. The first driver under 22 seconds was Bud Sterrett
in the Sterling Plumbing Chevy V8 Sprinter with a 21.90 in 1959. Walt Kennedy
blistered the 1/2 mile with a 20.9 in 1974 and it wasn't until '76 that Gary
Howard broke into the 19's.

At the beginning of 1979 only Gary Howard, his brother Steve and
Buster Venard had turned a 19 sec. lap at Ascot. Then Dean did a 19.666 on July
28th. The final night of the year, Nov. 17, Jimmy Oskie became the 10th
"Cragar 19 second club" member, the 4 time CRA Champion went on to win
the Don Peabody Classic that same night and the tittle to become the only 5 time
CRA Champion. *Dean Thompson had fast time for the night with a new track
record of 19.632.
