Santa Maria, CA, Apr. 26 - Jimmy May, a Midget and sprint car racing
veteran, won his second consecutive 25-lap NMRA-TQ Midget feature
victory Saturday at the third-mile, clay Santa Maria Speedway.
It was the third race of the 14-race NMRA season. May, who did
not compete in the season opener, moved to seventh place in current
points. The Ventura County resident drove one of two Greg
Edenholm-owned, HP Enterprises Dennis Hart-built chassis with a
Hart/Honda engine. May also won a 2002 NMRA-TQ feature at the track,
giving him three NMRA triumphs in the second year of operation for
the "reborn" NMRA organization. Scott Hansen, a Simi Valley-based USAC-TQ, Midget, and current 360 Sprint Car winner, was a close runner-up to May in the second Edenholm TQ Midget. Steve Lambert finished third in his brothers' Hart/Hart Honda. Chuck West, the 2002 NMRA driving champion from Fresno, took fourth place in a West Evans-owned Stealth/Vesco Suzuki. Walt Johnson drove Guy Barber's Stewart/Clerc Honda, the 2002 NMRA championship car, to fifth position. Jody Bandfield, Chris Hedge, West Evans, Kenny Wiley and Steve Parke rounded out the top ten finishers in a 13-car field. Hedge led the first seven laps; May paced the final 18 rounds. West and Hedge captured the pair of eight-lap heat races. Time trials were not conducted. Johnson had his point lead decrease from 15 to seven points over Lambert. Twenty drivers have earned 2003 points. Barber's car owner point lead went from 15 to seven points over Dave Lambert. Eighteen car owners have tallied points this season. NMRA-TQ Midgets will return to Santa Maria Speedway for round four on May 10.
