IRWINDALE, Calif. - Josh Lakatos started fifth, took the lead
on lap 16 from polestarter/race-long leader Bobby McGowan and won
his fourth USAC Ford Focus Midget feature of the season Saturday.
The 20-lap race on the third-mile Irwindale Speedway was his first
triumph at the track near his Pasadena home. Lakatos, a 1996 Summer
Olympics silver medal winner in trap shooting, drove his own car.
He won $500 from the $2,710 purse. The 30-year old winner
ranked second in point standings entering the Irwindale event. He
cut the point lead from 54 to 46 points.
Chris Rahe also passed McGowan on lap 16 for
second position and trailed Lakatos by 0.296 seconds in an all green
flag race completed in 5:03.453. McGowan settled for third.
Seventeen of the 18 starters finished and 15 drivers ran all 20
laps.
USAC Ford Focus California (South) point leader
Todd Hunsaker set the fastest qualifying time of 14.657. He started
sixth in the six-car inversion and finished fourth to retain his
point advantage. Garratt Boyden, Brad Galedrige, Jon Wilcox, female
racer Ashley Walker, Ryan Kaplan and Steve Davis completed the top
ten finishers.
