Jones is back for sure! If you were at The PAS on Labor Day Sunday, you
know that Tony Jones had the 50-lap main event won until his engine let go.
The following Saturday night at Manzanita, Jones took the Mike Wall Trucking #37
to it’s first ever main event win. The following week he had a disaster
at The PAS and was eliminated early in the main due to the two stop rule…
Speaking of Mike Wall Trucking. I saw their name on the hood of Tony
Elliott’s Sprint Car at the USAC Sprint Car race that was televised on ESPN
(from Iowa) a couple weeks back… Big name entries are coming in for the November 1st,
2nd and 3rd Budweiser/Temecula Valley Pipe and Supply
$25,000.00 to win Oval Nationals. Twenty-four time Northern California
Sprint Car Champion Brent Kaeding, 2000 Chico Champ Jason York, Northern
California star Eric Rossi, USAC star J.J. Yeley, Arizona’s “Bullet” Bob
Ream, 2000 USAC National Sprint Car Rookie of the Year Bud Kaeding, 2000 USAC
Silver Bullet Champion Tracy Hines and a host of other visiting superstars will
take on the best SCRA has to offer. 1997 Oval Nationals Champion Rip
Williams, Cory Kruseman, Richard “The Gassman” Griffin, defending Champion
Tony Jones, 1999 Oval Nationals Champ. “Super” Rickie Gaunt, 1998 Oval
Nationals Champion Rodney Argo, Mike Kirby, “Haulin’ Hollywood” John
Scott, Mexican National Champion Steve Ostling, Troy Rutherford, Mike English,
Danny “Showtime” Sheridan and the rest of the SCRA gang will be out to
defend their home turf against the visiting stars. Three day passes for
the Oval Nationals are on sale now for $45.00 (a $9.00 savings) by calling (909)
940 0134 or they are on sale at the track every race night. The Thursday
and Friday preliminaries will see the return of the popular Twin-20 lap main
events… It was a pleasure to have Fox Sports and Speedway
Illustrated’s Dick Berggren at The PAS a few weeks ago. Berggren was in
town doing a story on how to make racing and marriage work together.
Berggren, who is one of the nicest persons you will ever meet at a racetrack,
was extremely impressed with The PAS … This Friday and Saturday, October 5th and Saturday
October 6th, the SCRA Sprint Cars and USAC Western States Midgets
will be at The PAS for a unique doubleheader. Both divisions will be in
action each night. Last year, there were 98 open wheel cars in the pits.
Brent Kaeding will be on hand… The time came a little to
fast. I was reading on Wagsweb.com that Hank Winter has officially retired
from Sprint Car racing. Ronnie Clark will finish the season in Hank’s car and then
purchase the car to race with SCRA in 2002. In case you missed it, Hank
will be racing Late Models on the pavement in his hometown of Tucson. …
New Webmaster for The PAS website is Lance Jennings from SCRAfan.com…
The final Kara Hendrick Memorial Race is slated for October 20th at
the Quarter-Midget track in Pomona. Hope to see you there… .
Condolences from everyone at The PAS to NASCAR Winston Cup driver Jason Leffler
and his family as Jason’s father Charlie recently passed away… Here is a
story about a guy who has had some recent good and bad luck. USAC Western
States Midget driver Rick Hendrix has had bad luck at The PAS over the past
couple years getting upside down twice on the back straightaway in major
proportions. However, on his birthday, his Father gave him a scratch off
lottery ticket and when he scratched it off, he went directly to the big spin
television show where he won $5,000.00… Winner of the last two Extreme
Figure 8 races at The PAS was Chris Laney. Chris is the brother-in-law of
SCRA star Mike Kirby. Thus far The PAS has staged four Figure 8 races and
Laney has won three of them. Incidentally, Kirby sat out last week’s
SCRA race at Santa Maria to race the Figure 8’s at The PAS. He was
running fourth in the Main until becoming the innocent victim of an intersection
tangle… Speaking of Chris Laney, he was on the pit crew of Troy
Cline’s Winston West ride. According to Kirby’s sister and Laney’s
wife, Carla, Cline will be heading South to wrench on the Winston Cup rides for
current NASCAR Craftsman Truck star Jack Sprague in 2002… Ex-SCRA
driver Gene Woods bought one of Jeff Burton’s old Winston Cup Fords from Roush
Racing and they are going to run it with Dodge body panels and a Dodge power
plant… Keep an eye on SCRA driver Bobby Cody. The young driver
looks to be a good one. He will run a limited schedule this season before
running for Rookie of the Year in 2002…
