If you wish to send a
card, letter or flowers to “Big” George Gervais, please send them to him c/o

91752…The Championship run for Richard “The Gasman” Griffin will
stop at three in a row. On
Wednesday July 18th, Griffin was working under a truck trying to cut
away a piece of metal with a grinder. The grinder swung around and severely cut his right arm.
The popular Silver City, New Mexico resident underwent surgery and is out
of the saddle for a while. Fortunately,
he plans to return by the end of the year.
You can send him get well wishes at: P.O. Box 924, Silver City, NM 88062 … Filling in
for Griffin in the red #50 is non other than Tony Jones…
While the injury will put an end to Griffin’s hopes of making it four
straight SCRA titles, putting Jones in the car will enable Ron Chaffin to
continue his quest for his seventh SCRA owner’s Championship in a row…
Report from John Scott has him competing in the USAC Silver Bullet Series in
2002… Michael Smith, aka
“ The King of Trona,” has had a job transfer to the state of Texas… Hate to say good-bye to one of the nicest people I have ever
met in racing. At the end of this
season Hank Winter will pull his last tear-off with SCRA. The almost weekly travel from Tucson, Arizona to California
is the reason. While Hank is
getting out of Sprint Car racing, he will be launching a new career in pavement
Late Models at Tucson Raceway Park. Replacing
a nice man like Hank Winter is impossible…
Has Danny Sheridan been on fire or what? He has been very close to winning his first SCRA main event.
Even as hot as he has been, Moose Racing just lost one of it’s major
sponsors due to economic reasons and a change in the management of the
company… Car owner Bruce Fisher
proudly points out that his driver, Mexican National Champion Steve Ostling, has
never lost a Sprint Car race in Mexico!!! Boy
did I screw up the last time SCRA was in Santa Maria.
After I got home from the Dwarf Nationals at The PAS, I jumped on the
computer to find out who won at Santa Maria.
I couldn’t find the results anywhere.
The same thing the next morning. If
I had just looked at “Wags 1:00 AM Results” on www.wagtimes.com,
I could have had them before I went to bed…
Former speedway motorcycle racers Bobby Cody made his SCRA debut at The
PAS on July 28th. He
turned a very respectable 18.424 in qualifying.
Cody plans on running a limited schedule this season before contesting
SCRA’s Rookie of the Year battle in 2002.
Another former Speedway star, John Aden, will soon make his SCRA debut as
well… Lets get back to Moose Racing for a moment.
They know what it is all about when dealing with the fans.
They, along with a few other teams, could give lessons on fan relations
to many of their SCRA counterparts. There
are a lot of teams who should pay attention to how the Moose Crew interacts with
the paying customers. For those
teams that can’t quite figure it out, fan relations are not just taking
fan’s money when they buy your t-shirts.
Remember – THE
FANS ARE THE ONES WHO PAY YOUR PURSE…
The PAS will probably host more games and contests for fans and SCRA
drivers on Sunday September 2nd (Labor Day Weekend).
Lets hope more drivers participate next time…
In the pits after the July 14 race at The PAS, someone stole the steering
wheel from Mike Kirby’s Sprint Car. If
the person who stole it is reading this, I have a question for you.
What are you going to do with it? The
right thing for you to do would be to return to its rightful owners.
You can do so by taking it to the #5 crew in the pits after an SCRA race
or by sending it to Mike Kirby in care of Perris Auto Speedway, 18700 Lake
Perris Drive, Perris, CA 92511…
