Have you ever watched a program on the Animal Planet network called
“Obrien’s Big Adventure? The night I was watching, the guy (I would say “Nut,” but
want to remain courteous) was catching poisonous snakes with his bare hands!
By now you may be asking your self, “So what the heck does this have to
do with Sprint Car Racin’?” The
guy looks a lot like SCRA regular Cal Smith. Check it out!
I believe the show is on every Sunday at 7:00 PM PST…
Thoughts and condolences go out to the family of Kenny Johnson who passed
away a little over a week ago after a battle with cancer.
Kenny was a “Big Time” Rip Williams fan and helper of Cal Smith.
Not only will he be missed by them, but also by all the fans he made
friends with while watching from the stands here at The PAS and Ascot…
Last time we were here, I revealed my ten favorite active oval track
names in the USA. Growing up in
Michigan and spending quite a bit of time in Canada in my formative years, I
want to give you my top ten Canadian oval track names starting with number ten
and working down to number one: 10. Kawartha Raceway (Ontario), 9. Flamboro
Speedway (Ontario), 8. Ohsweken Speedway (Ontario), 7. Swift Current Motor
Speedway (Saskatchewan), 6. Hay River Speedway (Nova Scotia), 5. Gold Pan
Speedway (British Columbia), 4. Yellowhead Raceway (Alberta), 3. Medicine Hat
Speedway (Alberta), 2. Moosehead Premium Dry Speedway (Nova Scotia), 1. Mosquito
Speedway (Ontario). Mosquito
Speedway is just above the Minnesota/Ontario border near Lake Superior.
There is an explicit reason the track is named what it is and like many
tracks in the Midwest and Southern USA and Southern Canada, they do sell
Mosquito Chasers and repellent at the souvenir stand during the spring…
If you have a business or a service and would like to advertise at The
PAS, call Charlie Watson at (909)940-0134.
He will fill you in on all facts. There
are only a few billboards spaces left for the 2001 season. Thousands of fans will see your company advertised here at
the track and so will millions more nationwide due to the Mills Videos on
ESPN2’S RPM Tonight… Speaking
of Dean Mills, his latest Sprint Car video is available now.
“SCRA2K Year in Review” can be yours by sending $39.95 + $5.00 for
shipping to Dean Mills, 6944 Lindley Avenue, Reseda, CA
91335. Hosted by TNN’s
Bobby Gerould and Mickey Dale, this enjoyable video is four hours long and
features coverage of every SCRA race, flip and winner’s interview for the year
2000. In addition, you get an up
close and personal look at Rickie Gaunt’s gold tooth.
That is worth the price of the video by itself…
Another great buy for any Sprint Car fan is the hot off the presses
edition of the National Sprint car Annual.
Over 200 photos, point standings from around North America and a drivers
listing of more 3,700 Sprint car drivers who raced in 2000.
Best of all, this winner is only $8.00!
I buy one every year. You
can order yours from: National Sprint Car Annual, P.O. Box 448, Comstock Park,
MI 49321-0448…
How about this one. There is
a Sprint Car driver down under by the name of Snowy White…
There will be Quarter Midget Racing at the Pomona Valley Quarter Midget
Track in Pomona, California March 31st, April 7th and 8th.
The track is located freeway close to the 10 and 60 freeways.
From the 10, exit at Indian Hill and go south.
Make a right on Holt and a left on East End.
Make another left on State Street and go about 500 feet.
The track will be on your right side.
From the 60 Freeway, exit at reservoir and go north.
Make a right on State Street. The
track will be on your right about 500 feet past East End…
There was a big birthday celebration on March 18th.
The “King of Trona,” Michael Smith, turned 24.
Smith led parade in his honor down Main Street in Trona on the big day…
Here is a nice story involving three nice guys.
While ”Hoser of the Year” Shawn McDonald was hospitalized last year,
“Super” Rickie Gaunt gave him a call and said that if he won the main event
at Ventura, he would award McDonald his trophy.
True to his word, Gaunt won and McDonald has the hardware to prove it.
On opening night here at the PAS in 2001, SCRA superstar Richard “The
Gasman” Griffin gave Shawn the trophy he received for winning the Passing
Masters Dash and for finishing second in the main event. Nice gestures from two nice guys. By the way, they are not the only ones who have done so…
How could I forget this? SCRA’s
own Ron Shuman was named 2000 Non Wing Promoter of the Year.
It was the second year in a row that Shuman was honored as such.
Congratulations Ronnie… Would
you like to receive race results, news and notes from The PAS over the Internet?
If yes, drop me an E-mail at sprintcarfanatic@aol.com.
Nothing to buy and no advertising. Just
results, press releases and notes… SCRA’s
will be at The PAS the next two weeks (March 31st and April 7th)…
