Chowchilla, CA.....Oct
17-18......Continuing the success that he has had at Chowchilla Speedway's 3/8
mile clay oval in 2003, Tracy's Danny Olmstead raced to feature wins both Friday
night and Saturday night in the unwinged 350 spec sprint action as the 3rd
Annual Open Wheel Roundup was run. Olmstead beat Keith Shipherd and Scott
Holloway in the Friday night preliminary feature, then was a wire to wire $1000
winner in the featured 30 lapper on Saturday night. NCMA champion Holloway ran
second ahead of female ace Brandy Ford. The dwarf cars ran a $2500 sectional
with the top teams from the Bay Area, NorCal and All Pro clubs. Steve Alberdi Jr
beat Zach Hurst and Howie Ross on Friday night. After a last place dash run
earlier put him in the fifth row, Petaluma's Hurst battled to the Saturday night
win over Alberdi Jr and Josh Hiatt. The sprint 100's rounded out the Saturday
night action and Kerry McColloch pulled off a near sweep capped by a feature win
ahead of dash winner Tony Gaoiran and Kenny Bair.
19 unwinged spec sprints
checked in for the Friday night action and they were divided into a pair of heat
races. Bakersfield's John Fenton won the first heat from a front row start with
his Cargill Welding mount ahead of Ed Amador and Ford. Olmstead charged forward
from sixth with his Stealth Motorsports entry to capture heat 2 over Chris
DeRuyter and Shipherd. Olmstead beat DeRuyter and Amador in the dash. The 20 lap
feature on Friday used an 8 car inversion off the heat race results, putting Tim
Sherman and Holloway on the front row. Sherman took a quick lead over Holloway
and Shipherd. Shipherd was the new leader on lap 3 as Olmstead moved quickly
from 8th to 2nd ahead of Holloway. A pair of quick yellows slowed the action and
Olmstead then raced into the lead over Shipherd and Holloway. The top five of
Olmstead, Shipherd, Holloway, Sherman and Ford ran unchanged to the checkered
flag and they were paid for the Friday night efforts. DeRuyter, Amador and Roy
Fisher rounded out the top 8. The field grew to 20 cars on Saturday night with
the addition of Russ Wullenwaber in a second George Terry car and Bobby Nichols
was able to race after fixing his Friday night brake problems. The night opened
with a special dash for the bottom six finishers from Friday night. Billy Garcia
took a quick lead in the Bob Dias car only to push high on the final lap with
Steve Bruno getting the $50 win. When the inversion pill was drawn for the big
money 30 lap main on Saturday, it came up a zero putting Olmstead and Shipherd
on the front row. Olmstead took a quick lead over Shipherd, Holloway and Ford.
John Keith and Scott Pierson tangled for an early yellow and Doug Gandy also
broke. Terry threw his rear nerf bar for another yellow flag. Olmstead continued
to lead Shipherd and Holloway until Shipherd's race ended with a steering box
failure on lap 15. Rim riding Holloway put constant pressure on Olmstead over
the remaining rounds, but could never pull off a pass. Ford ran third ahead of
DeRuyter, Amador and Orland track champion Josh Jacobo. Veteran Charlie Correia
was 7th ahead of Sam Fries and Fenton.
The dwarf cars had an
outstanding 34 car field on Friday and another 34 on Saturday. Friday heat
winners were Dave Penney, Ross, Ricardo Rivera and Al Ghiorso. A special dash
was run for the teams that struggled in the heat action and Mark Tillinger won
that race ahead of Curt Jordan and Doug Martin. A small C Main found Martin the
winner ahead of Pat Weger and Brian Tillinger. The top four had advanced from
each of the heat races so six spots were available in the 14 car B Main. Double
division racer Correia won the B Main ahead of Mark Chaves, Ty Schmidt, P Weger,
Matt Sargent and the busy Martin. The feature race was dominated by the NorCal
teams as Alberdi Jr won ahead of Hurst, Ross, Mike Grenert, Ghiorso, Rivera,
Steve Alberdi Sr, Hiatt and Bay Area club racers Ryan Ameln and Howard Fergerson.
Those ten drivers opened Saturday night with a dash to set the starting order in
the first five rows for the rich weekend finale A Main. Hiatt won the dash ahead
of Ross, Alberdi Sr, Alberdi Jr, Fergerson and Grenert.
The remaining cars raced in three heat races with the wins going to Chaves,
Sargetn and Gilbert Toste. Again, a small C Main determined the final four B
Main starters and Justin Winter won that race ahead of Ray Etherton and Chris
Dorto. The large 20 car B Main moved the top 12 into the A Main action. Toste
won the B Main ahead of Chaves, Martin, Schmidt, Sargent, John Anderson,
Etherton and Gene Pires Jr. Hurst was last in that 10 car dash and that forced
him to pass 9 cars to get his A Main win. Friday night winner Alberdi Jr ran
second ahead of Hiatt, Alberdi Sr, Grenert, 16th starter Anderson, Fergerson,
Schmidt, Martin, Ameln and Pires.
The sprint 100 action
fieled 11 cars, but Jim Phifer was done in hot laps. Bair beat Ed Zimmerman and
Gregg Hanson in heat 1. K McColloch beat Gaoiran and Brett McColloch in
heat 2. The dash went to Gaoiran ahead of K McColloch and Bair. The ten car
feature saw K McColloch and Gaoiran dueling for the win with K McColloch
winning. Bair ran third ahead of Jimmy Steward, Zimmernan, Hanson and Robbie
Bredehoft.
